Europe retains Ryder Cup

A fantastic day of golf on Sunday saw Europe retain the Ryder Cup after beating the U.S. 14.5-13.5 in front of vociferous support for the home team in the biennial golf event.

Martin Kaymer made a clutch par putt on 18 at the Medinah Country Club to secure the return of the trophy, and Tiger Woods conceded the final hole to Francesco Molinari to give the Europeans an outright win.

Down 10-6 going into the 12 singles matches, Europe matched the biggest last day comeback in the history of the three-day tournament by winning 8.5 points from the head-to-head contests.

“The first two days, nothing went our way,” said European captain Jose Maria Olazabal. “But we changed it early today and that was key.” Europe were buoyed by both a good start to the round and some late-hole struggles by the Americans, and they have now won five of the last six Ryder Cups.

Luke Donald beat Bubba Watson 2&1 to start the day, and the holders won five of the first six matches to bring the contest even.

Ian Poulter beat Webb Simpson 2 up to go 4-0 for the weekend and take his all-time Ryder Cup record to 12-3, one of the best ever.

Poulter was one of three Europeans to win the 17th and 18th holes to change the result of his match.

Justin Rose made three long puts on 16, 17 and 18 to stun Phil Mickelson, who thought he had won the match only to see his chip on 17 narrowly skirt the hole.

“I wouldn’t say I’ve ever made three big putts in a row like that in my life,” said Rose, who won 1 up.

Sergio Garcia posted a similarly dramatic win over Jim Furyk, who missed an 8-foot par putt on 18 in losing the last two holes.

“I don’t know how we did it,” said the Spaniard afterwards.

In explaining the comeback, Olazabal pointed to the spirit of countryman Seve Ballesteros, who died last year but was an inspirational figure for the Europeans in this tournament.

“Seve will always be present with this team. He was a big factor in this event,” he said. “I think the boys understood that believing was the key. And they did.”

Kohli steers India to a crucial win

Virat Kohli celebrates as India beat Pakistan during the ICC Twenty20 World Cup Super Eight match in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Sunday. Photo: K.R. Deepak

While the world watched, India turned on the heat against its arch-rival and declared ownership rights to a Sunday night here at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

Powered by Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 78, India defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in a crucial ICC World Twenty20 Super Eights Group II match. India finished with 129 for two in 17 overs, a fitting batting riposte following its bowlers’ fine effort that bundled out Pakistan for 128 in 19.4 overs.

India lost Gautam Gambhir in the very first over of the chase as he drilled the ball straight back to spinner Raza Hasan.

A touch of Delhi still lingered at the crease as Virat Kohli allied with Virender Sehwag, who was picked ahead of Harbhajan Singh in the playing eleven.

Good stand

Sehwag swatted and thumped Umar Gul and once those early appetisers were consumed, a 74-run second-wicket partnership ensured that India was well set to extend its vice-like grip on Pakistan on global cricket events since the inaugural conventional World Cup in 1975.

The stage though belonged to Kohli (78 n.o., 61b, 9x4, 2x6), who seems to have taken a liking to the Pakistan attack.

The last time he played against the acclaimed rival in an Asia Cup ODI at Dhaka, Kohli scored a devastating 183.

The same authority and aggression was displayed again and fortune too favoured him as he was dropped on 42 and 64 with Umar Akmal and substitute Mohammad Sami being the guilty fielders.

Kohli continued unhindered even after Sehwag departed and along with Yuvraj Singh, pocketed the game for India.

Delectable

The manner in which he dismantled Pakistan’s twin sword-arms — Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal — with delectable drives and the power-packed lofted shot, effectively swung the tussle, India’s way and M.S. Dhoni’s men will now stay afloat in the tournament.

Earlier, India struck a dominant note right from the moment Mohammad Hafeez elected to bat.

The Pakistan skipper took guard against Zaheer Khan and the eventful first over, included three wides, a four by Imran Nazir and a dropped catch as Sehwag grassed Hafeez on one.

The tone for a riveting contest was set and when Irfan Pathan trapped Nazir, Pakistan threw up a surprise with Shahid Afridi stepping out as the No. 3 batsman. However Afridi failed to rein in his vaulting ambition.

Batting crisis

Soon Pakistan lurched from one batting crisis as Yuvraj and Kohli prised out three wickets between them.

Shoaib Malik and Umar Akmal briefly salvaged the innings with a 47-run sixth-wicket partnership before succumbing to R. Ashwin’s second spell.

Yuvraj then decided to prove that his throw is still potent and that left Yasir Arafat stranded while Balaji nipped the lashing tail.

Defending champ Sourabh bows out, other top shuttlers advance

Defending champion Sourabh Verma today became a second-round casualty but for the rest of the top shuttlers it was just another day in office as they expectedly reached the third round of the 77th Senior National Badminton Championships here.

Sourabh, who got a first-round bye, was defeated 21-18 17-21 15-21 by a hitherto unknown Shreyansh Jaiswal from Chattisgarh in the men’s singles competition at the Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor complex.

London Olympics quarterfinalist P.Kashyap, Ajay Jayaram, Sai Praneeth, Anand Pawar, Arvind Bhat, Chetan Anand and Anup Sridhar also reached the third round in men’s singles, among others.

Defending champion in women’s singles, P.V.Sindhu, advanced to the third round after winning 21-10 21-3 against Juhi Dewangan.

Arundhati Pantawane, Neha Pandit, Mohita Sahdev, Tanvi Lad (9), Trupti Murgunde, PC Thulasi and Sayali Gokhale also reached the next stage in women’s singles.

World number 33 Sourabh, who played for Petroleum Sports Promotion Board in the team event, was leading the match after winning the first game but 17-year-old Jaiswal raised his game to create pressure on his fancied rival.

The 19-year-old Sourabh crumbled under pressure to allow Shreyansh to come back into the match.

Despite losing the opening game, Shreyansh grew in confidence and went into the break at 11-10.

Sourabh tried to get his act together but ended up making too many unforced errors as his younger opponent walked away with the match in the end. Shreyansh will next take on Nikhilesh Sarma in the third round.

“I never played him before. He is the defending champion and when I went into the match, I thought I will lose. But then in the second game, I started retrieving everything and it put pressure on him. I slowly grew in confidence and I am extremely happy with my effort,” said Shreyansh, who has been training under Dronacharya awardee coach Mohammad Arif for the last five years in Hyderabad.

Sourabh said he could not execute his strategy in the match.

“I won the first game but in the second midway, I was in two minds with my strokes. I was confused what strokes to play and ended up making too many errors. Initially I was confident of rubbing off the deficit but then I got under pressure,” he said.

The Madhya Pradesh lad, who had skipped the Japan Open this month to focus on the Nationals, will next play in the Denmark and French Open next month.

Health Secretary ordered to act against two government doctors

They had allegedly tampered with the attendance record of another doctor

The Madras High Court Bench in Madurai has directed the Health Secretary to initiate departmental action against Muthukumaran, former Head of the Department of Anaesthesia and R. Thenmozhi, a chief doctor at the same department at Thanjavur Government Medical College for having allegedly tampered with the attendance records of another doctor.

Allowing a writ petition by the victim doctor Ramesh Babu, Justice S. Manikumar directed the High Court Registry to forward a copy of his order to the Health Secretary for appropriate action against the two doctors who were continuing to serve in the hospital despite the filing of a charge sheet against them for the alleged offences of indulging in forgery and manipulation of records.

The judge pointed out that the petitioner had joined the post graduate diploma course in anaesthesia at the Thanjavur Medical College for the academic year 2007-09. In March 2009, the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University did not issue him a hall ticket to write the final year examinations citing lack of requisite attendance.

Enquiries made by him revealed that his superiors had tampered with the attendance records and had also not forwarded a leave letter submitted by him, during the period of illness, to the authorities concerned. Immediately, he lodged a complaint with the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital police station.

The police registered a case under Sections 465 (forgery), 466 (forgery of public register) and 167 (public servant framing an incorrect document with intent to cause injury) of the Indian Penal Code. After making enquiries with the college Dean and others, a charge sheet was also laid against the two doctors. But the proceedings in the case were stayed by the High Court following a criminal revision petition filed by the duo.

In the meantime, Dr. Babu filed the present writ petition in the High Court in March 2009 and obtained an interim order to write the examination. However, declaration of results was withheld until the disposal of the case. After that, the petition was listed for final hearing only now after a delay of about three years and five months.

Shocked over the failure of the medical college to inform about the registration of criminal case against two of its doctors to the medical university, the judge said that the duo ought to have been subjected to departmental action as the stay on the criminal proceedings could not be a bar for the government to initiate disciplinary proceedings.

"The authorities, themselves being doctors, have failed to perceive the agony undergone for all these years by another doctor, a budding anaesthetist... Had he been permitted to take up the examination in the normal course, his prospects would have been better... He would have even pursued higher education," the judge said and ordered declaration of his results forthwith.

Controversy over Ph.D. degree to college Principal

The American College issue which appeared to have settled down is back on the burner as questions have been raised over the Ph.D. certificate issued to Principal M. Davamani Christober, by the Alagappa University, Karaikudi. Producing a set of documents to the media here on Friday, the Action Committee for Protecting American College Constitution (ACPAC) demanded a probe to ascertain the validity of the Ph.D. certificate.

It alleged that the Ph.D. degree held by the Principal had “several discrepancies” and cited the findings of Alagappa University’s Research Advisory Committee which stated that the certificate issued in Education (inter-disciplinary) with education and mathematics subjects be withdrawn.

“The Ph.D. certificate issued to Mr. Davamani Christober is printed in total violation of regulation issued by Alagappa University. A probe should be ordered into how such wilful error was committed to suit the interest of the candidate,” the Action Committee demanded.

Joint statement

T. Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar, vice-president, ACPAC, and D. Winfred Thomas, secretary, in a joint statement, said that the recommendation to withdraw the inter-disciplinary degree awarded to the Principal of American College was ratified at the 139 Syndicate meeting of Alagappa University held on September 9 in Chennai.

They pointed out that the Research Advisory Committee of Alagappa University which gave its findings on July 19 this year after an enquiry had examined all the records and found that Mr. Christober had registered for Ph.D. in education discipline only but finally he had been awarded inter-disciplinary degree with education and mathematics.

Getting home nurses continues to be a challenge

‘Finding a person who will stay for a long time is difficult’

When V.K. Radha, 60 years old, hired a nurse from an old-age home to look after her ailing mother, V.K. Rukmini, 87 years old, she didn’t bargain for the nurse leaving them in just 15 days. “She left for her home for Onam and did not even give us a hint about quitting the job. When we called her, she said she had to leave to take care of her sick mother.”

Home nurses have always been high on demand. The need is more in families where the elderly themselves have to single-handedly take care of their old-age and bed-ridden parents.

However, finding a person who will stay for a long time is difficult.

Reliability

Reliability is another issue, says Radha.

“A home nurse does not belong to your family, yet knows all about you. This can be dangerous if the person has bad intentions.”

Apeetha Venkatraman 74 years old, still remembers the day last year when she saw her husband, Venkatraman, 80 years old, collapse, as he got out of his car.

“He suffered from a brain stroke and was paralysed from neck down. Even though I have no ailments, I needed a man’s assistance to nurse him. I needed help to turn him on both sides as otherwise he could develop bed sores.”

Agency

So, she hired a home nurse through an agency. But the man stayed just for one night. He left the next day without saying a word.

“I decided not to call a home nurse. I called the temporary nurse the hospital had sent us. He has been staying with us for a long time now. But when he takes leave, it is tough for me to manage.”

Some people do not look for a home nurse due to the high fees they charge. Kalyani Lakshminarayan, 67 years old, helps her 94-year-old mother-in-law Parvati Raman, who walks with the help of a walker.

Demands

“I have been taking care of her for the past 11 years and will continue if my health permits. We cannot afford home nurses as they ask for a lot of money. And moreover, there is the added responsibility to meet their demands for food, clothes and other expenses.”

College student wins Radio City Super Singer title

The week-end crowd at Brookefields was in for a musical treat on Saturday evening as it got to hear the six finalists of the Radio City Super Singer contest render their best. The novice participants did not fail to attract the crowd as it stayed till the end to see the best talent earn the title.

Wild card entry contestant Larsan Cyril went on to win the Radio City Super Singer title after a hard-won race. College student Cyril, prodded by college mates and motivated by his father, was surprised by his own win.

He beat 3,000 contestants from Coimbatore to take home a Scooty Pep+ and Rs. 50,000. Cyril was among the six finalists who crooned in the melody, retro and fast beat rounds to gain the title. Rajesh Sharma, a faculty from an engineering college, was the runner-up, while 21-year old Anjana Parthiban became the ‘Voice of Purity’. The other finalists, Devi Kamakshi, Revathy Krishnamoorthy, and Vinod, took home trophies.

The team of Radio City was taken aback when it got 3,000 applications in response to the contest. Undeterred, from September 3 to 29 it received auditions over phone, website, CDs and got it shortlisted to 30 and then to the final six.

“Once we got the number down to six, we involved the public and let them vote for their favourite singer. The response from the people of Coimbatore has been good all through. This kind of a show is a first time for us and we are happy that the best talent won. We plan to use the voice of all six finalists for our shows in the future,” Solomon Porres, Programming Head of Radio City, said.

Playback singer Maya of the “Un thalai mudi” from “Kaadhalil Vizhunthen” fame and music director Siddharth Babu of the forthcoming film “Yen Indhe Maiyakkam” acted as judges from the preliminary round to the finals.

Huge response

Ms. Maya, an alumna of Coimbatore Institute of Technology, said she was not surprised that there was such a huge response from Coimbatore.

“There is an abundance of talent here. Only they are shy to come forward. The quality of music from all the contestants has been very good. They have worked hard and practised well,” she added.

Orchestra lead Krishnakumar ‘Lakshmi Shruthi’, who trained the finalists for five days, said that they were a dedicated lot and were consistent in their efforts to perform their best.

But it was not music all through. Radio City listeners who are used to hearing them on radio, got to hear it live as Radio Jockeys Viji and Dongri David kept the audience engrossed with their lively banter through the evening.

The Hindu was the media partner for the event.

Samiti contests airport company’s claims

Says clearance obtained by concealing facts about land

The claim of the KGS Aranmula International Airport Limited that the company has completed all formalities for setting up the private airport in Aranmula is suspicious and misleading, Thiruvaranmula Paithruka Grama Karma Samiti (TPGKS) president K. Haridas has said.

In a statement here on Saturday, he alleged that the company official’s announcement on the proposal to set up a special economic zone in Aranmula amounted to challenging the government.

The three villages of Aranmula, Mallappuzhassery and Kidangannur were declared industrial areas through the backdoor, keeping people in the dark, he alleged. Mr. Haridas said the government should clarify whether the announcement of the private company was with the knowledge of the State authorities.

He said the vacation court here had issued an injunction order preventing the KGS Group from entering the illegally converted portion of paddy land in Aranmula.

The Kerala High Court too had maintained that no construction activity be carried out there without complying with legal formalities.

The TPGKS leader alleged that the private company had managed to obtain clearances from the Union Ministry of Environment by concealing crucial facts concerning the land identified for the airport project.

The Environment Impact Assessment Report submitted by the company did not mention that the site identified for the project comprised wetland and paddy fields, he said.

He said the people of Aranmula would never permit construction of the proposed airport by converting the biodiversity-rich wetland and paddy lands.

TPGKS general convener Pradeep Ayroor was present.

'Malnutrition a major problem in Hyderabad Karnataka districts'

Shashil Namoshi, MLC, inaugurates a seminar on malnutrition in Gulbarga on Saturday. Photo: Special Arrangement

Number of malnourished children in the region estimated at 3,953

The State government is taking several steps to address malnutrition among children, Shashil Namoshi, MLC, has said.

He was speaking at a seminar on malnutrition organised by the departments of Information and Kannada and Culture, and the Government College for Women, here on Saturday.

The government is focussing on providing nutritious food at anganwadis and through the midday meal programme in primary and high schools, he said.

Sangeeta Kattimani, a faculty member at the government college, said that preventing malnutrition among children was as important as addressing it.

Child marriage

“Several times we forget that practices such as consanguine marriages can lead to syndromes. Getting girls married before they reach 18 years of age can lead to debilitating conditions. Studies have revealed that in Koppal district, nearly 44 per cent of girls marry before they turn 18,” she said.

According to Ms. Kattimani, of the 1,12,163 children not covered by anganwadis, 21,151 are suffering from severe malnutrition.

The number of malnourished children in Hyderabad Karnataka districts was estimated at 3,953, she said.

Deaths

There were reports of the death of 2,689 children from malnutrition-related causes in the last three years in Raichur district, Ms. Kattimani said. She said that pregnant women should register themselves at the nearest anganwadi centres and undergo regular check-ups.

They should insist on institutional deliveries and seek benefits of programmes like Janani Suraksha Yojane and Madilu, she said.

She urged the government to start additional child healthcare units under the Bal Sanjeevani scheme in government and private hospitals.

She also sought the establishment of primary health centres in uncovered villages.

Those present at the seminar included District Health and Family Welfare Officer Shivraj Sajjanshetty, Child Development Project Officer Tippanna Sirasagi, Government Pre-University College principal N.N. Hosur and T.S. Pawar from the Department of Information.

Folk singer Suhasini Phulare presented a cultural programme.

Sri Lanka restrict West Indies to 129/5

AP West Indies' batsman Johnson Charles plays a shot during the ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup Super Eight match against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, Sri Lanka on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers produced a disciplined performance as they restricted West Indies to 129 for five in their Super Eights match of the ICC World Twenty20 here on Saturday.

Mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis led the way with measly figures of two for 12, in the process reaching the 100—wicket mark in T20 cricket.

There was a wicket apiece for Nuwan Kulasekara, Jeevan Mendis and Angelo Mathews.

Marlon Samuels was the West Indies’ top scorer with a 35—ball 50, while Dwayne Bravo contributed 40 off 34 deliveries.

Earlier, the West Indies’ decision to bat first backfired as the Sri Lankans kept them on leash throughout the 20 overs at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

The hosts had their first breakthrough when Ajantha had Charles Johnson stumped by Kumar Sangakkara with the final delivery of the fifth over.

But the bigger for the Windies was losing dangerman Chris Gayle, who, after a frustrating stay at the crease, slashed at a wide delivery by Kulasekara only to offer a diving catch to Sangakkara.

Bravo and Samuels tried to revive West Indies’ innings with a 65—run third—wicket stand —— the highest for this wicket between the two teams.

But as the duo sought to settle down, the visitors lost two more wickets in the form of Bravo and Kieron Pollard.

While Bravo was done in by legspinner Jeevan Mendis, Ajantha sent back Pollard with a quicker one to reach his 100th wicket in this form of the game, including domestic competitions.

At this stage, West Indies badly needed big hitters to prop them up, and they found their men in Samuels and Andre Russell (19 off 14 balls), who produced a few effective blows towards the end to give their total a semblance of respectability

Sehwag raises questions by skipping net session again

The Hindu Virender Sehwag talking to Zaheer Khan, Virat Kohli and M.S. Dhoni during an practice session on the eve of ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup match against India in Colombo on September 29, 2012. Photo: K.R. Deepak

The Indian team’s way of handling senior opener Virender Sehwag and the player’s own attitude in this ongoing World Twenty20 is certain to raise questions whether all is well in the Indian camp.

On the eve of the high-voltage match against arch rivals Pakistan, Sehwag was again seen skipping the entire net session although he did participate in a football game.

While skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli also did not bat during the hour and half net session having played yesterday’s match, it was inexplicable to watch Sehwag relax and enjoy a chit-chat with other team members when serious questions are being raised about his form and commitment in the shortest format.

During the afternoon training session, the Indians enjoyed their game of soccer for close to 75 minutes —— a lengthier session by their standards. Sehwag was goalkeeper of one team and played the entire duration.

Finally, when the net session started, it was again Irfan Pathan who was all padded up and had the first hit in one of the two nets.

The fact that Pathan, who scored 31 off 30 balls against Australia, batted first in the batting session is seen as an indication that he may again open against Pakistan.

Skipper Dhoni has always had a penchant of bowling ‘wrong one’ to Indian media and it won’t be a surprise if Sehwag walks alongside Gautam Gambhir against Pakistan as Irfan Pathan’s technique was not good enough for handling a crafty bowler like Umar Gul.

However one expected Sehwag to have a decent hit at the nets when likes of Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and Gambhir all looked serious during the session.

Sehwag was seen present in a melee chatting in a relaxed manner with Dhoni and Kohli. While Dhoni and Kohli had a reason not to bat, Sehwag, if he is fit (as claimed by team management) had no reason not to bat at all.

World T20’s over the years have not been a happy experience for the ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’. Even during India’s victorious campaign in the 2007 edition, Sehwag missed the final giving Yusuf Pathan a chance to make his international debut.

During 2009 edition in England, there was a huge controversy as to whether the opener had carried an injury into the tournament which led to skipper Dhoni marching in with the entire team to read out a press statement.

In the 2010 edition in West Indies, Sehwag missed the entire tournament with an injury as India went in with Murali Vijay.

The 2012 edition is also turning out to be an unhappy one for him and it only depends on Sehwag to change the current script.

Detonator blast triggers panic

The Hindu Police inspecting remains of a petty shop, which was totally damaged by a bomb blast at Meenaksinaickenpatti near Dindigul on Thursday. Photo: G. Karthikeyan

The blast took place in a petty shop; special teams formed

A powerful detonator went off at a shop at West Meenakshinaickenpatti on the Palani-Dindigul Highway near Dindugul in the early hours of Thursday. The impact was so great that it ripped apart the roof and the petty shop was turned into a heap of rubble.

Local people on hearing the sound rushed to the street and tension prevailed in the area. The shop was owned by S. Shanmugam (41). After inspecting the spot, Superintendent of Police, T. Jayachandran said that investigations revealed that the bomb was a powerful one. Special teams have been constituted. Meanwhile, one of the teams searched the houses of Shanmugam and his relative Pandia Rajan and seized eight detonators from Shanmugam’s house. They also secured the duo.

Shanmugam was working in a stone quarry unit and his relative was looking after the petty shop. Reasons for keeping the detonators in the petty shop and at the house were not known.

It may be recalled that two decades ago, an unused bomb went off at a scrap unit in the town when workers attempted to break it using an axe.

House panel finds misuse of river management fund

C.P. Mohammed, Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Environment, has said that the panel will recommend to the State government to order an inquiry into the misuse of huge sums from the river management fund in most districts in the State.

He told The Hindu here on Thursday that most districts had not furnished the full details of the utilisation of the fund. A scrutiny of the available data showed corruption and misuse.

He said the committee had directed the District Collectors to furnish the details of the amounts collected for the fund and spent. In most cases, the spending was for raids on illegal sand-mining from the rivers and afforestation on the river banks, though no evidence of it could be seen anywhere. Prima facie, these claims were made only to take away huge amounts from the fund.

He said an exclusive sitting of the committee would be held in Pattambi next week to discuss the destruction faced by the Bharathapuzha, the lifeline of the people of Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram districts.

He said the “sand mafia” had become uncontrollable and had destroyed the river to a great extent. Successive governments had failed to curb the illegal sand-mining and encroachments on the river course and banks.

He said the committee had received petitions from the Bharathapuzha Protection Committee, Jana Jagratha and other organisations at its sitting at the Palakkad Collectorate on Monday, demanding the setting up of the Bharathapuzha Development Authority.

The committee would recommend to the government that the authority be formed. It wanted the government to prepare an action plan for the protection of the river and implement it with the Central fund available for river protection.

Dipika Pallikal survived some anxious moments before getting past USA’s Latasha Khan to make the main draw of the Carol Weymuller Open Gold 50 squash tournament here.

The world number 15 Dipika defeated 28-ranked American 12-10 11-6 8-11 11-4 in her second and final qualifying match at the Heights Casino squash courts in Brooklyn here on Wednesday.

The Chennai girl will play against world number four, Jenny Duncalf of England in the first round of the USD 50,000 event.

In the match against Latasha, Dipika got a good lead in the first game and whenever Latasha tried to make a comeback, the Indian put in drop shots. At 9-5 down, Latasha fought back by using her array of shots to level the score at 9-9, but Dipika managed to scrap through to win the first game.

The 21-year-old Dipika got a good start in the second game and forced Latasha to make errors.

Latasha did try to make a comeback but Dipika controlled the rallies again to gain a comfortable 2-0 lead.

In the third, Dipika made a few errors and even though, she made an extra push at the end, Latasha came through, winning it 11-8.

Dipika started the fourth game perfectly, moving the ball around the court well.

Latasha stayed patient and tried to make a contest out of it but Dipika was always in control of her game and won the match.

“I am relieved to get through. Latasha is an experienced player and she took full advantage of it when I started going short in the third game. In the fourth, I hit more straight and less cross-courts which made a big difference,” said Dipika after the match.

India hold China, end AFC U-16 Football with head held high

India scored an injury time penalty goal to hold two-time champions China 2-2 in their last group match and bow out of the AFC Under-16 Football Championship with their head held high here on Thursday.

India took the lead through Daniel Lalhlimpuia’s 19th minute strike but China replied with two goals through captain Wang Jinxian (21st) and Zhang Yuning (32nd) in the Group D match.

Defender Myron Mendes scored from the spot in the third of the four-minute stoppage time to salvage some pride for India though he broke Chinese hearts.

With Uzbekistan losing to Syria in a simultaneous match, China were heading into Sunday’s quarter-final as contenders for group winners but the dying minute Indian equaliser saw them crash out of the tournament.

A win today would not have ensured India a quarterfinal berth after Syria’s victory over Uzbekistan but holding China 2-2 was no mean achievement.

India ended the tournament on two points as they had lost their opening group match to Uzbekistan (2-3) before playing out a goal-less draw with Syria. China finished third on three points behind Syria (four) and Uzbekistan (four).

Two top teams from each of the four groups qualify for the quarterfinals.

China were dominant from the outset but it was India who drew the first blood after China missed as many as three chances, when Lalhlimpuia beat his marker and scored past Chinese goalie Chen Wei off Raja Rawat’s sublime cross in the 19th minute.

The Chinese were quick to reply as they took only two minutes to cancel out India’s lead through Jinxian’s simple header off Chen Yi’s cross. They added the second goal in the 32nd minute with Mohammed Sajid’s deflection off Yuning’s strike took the wrong way inside the Indian net, leaving goalie Supratim Bhattacharjee stood still.

The Indians dominated the second half with play confined at the Chinese half for most part but Colm Toal’s boys failed to break free for an opening before the dying minute of the stoppage time.

Second half substitute Chen Weiming brought down Alen Deory inside the penalty area, prompting Jordan referee Naser Al Ghafary to point at the spot in the third minute of the 4—minute stoppage time and Myron Mendes converted the chance to earn a point for India.

Mendes expertly took his penalty at the extreme right of the goal as goalkeeper Wei guessed the ball right but his stretched arms failed to reach the goal-bound shot.

Joy of being: Paths to Happiness - Knowledge

One should also not forget that even when pursuing the Path of Devotion all Knowledge will become available to one post the Identification with Him and when the Truth is known through the Path of Knowledge, devotion will arise.

How does one begin this journey? Typically it starts with a normal mental quest to understand why suffering or the ups and downs of one’s life. The morequestions arise initially, the more confused one becomes. Then one will go in search of books and articles which expound philosophies or give the Truth from various perspectives. These will still be confusing till suddenly an understanding arises. This will be onlya Mental understanding and this would have been preceded by a deep and intense prayer to the Lord of one’s choice. This would have arisen because there is a quest for knowledge to understand how one can surpass or live with the suffering of this world. The next stage would be that the knowledge becomes more experiential and the glimpses of Happiness and the intensity of the same then reinforce the same very quickly and strongly.

One factor needs to be borne in mind i.e. once the Truth is understood then it is not necessary or even useful to read and understand about different perspectives to approach the Truth except for technical knowledge or for want of something better to do! What is more relevant or important is for one to spend as much time as possible in introspection (again not mental) to experience the Truth. This is what Ramana Maharishi means as asking ‘Who am I’. This quest leads one deeper and deeper. Even as this goes on, the mental doubts, fears and anxieties which arise will be answered by our intuitive understanding of the Truth. The best words to explain this again is in the TaitreyaUpanishad (Sri Aurobindos translation)

In the AnandaValli the reference is ;

‘for when the Spirit that is within us finds his refuge and firm foundation in the Invisible Bodiless Undefinable and Unhoused Eternal, then he hath passed beyond the reach of Fear!

This indicates that one will have fearas long as one does not realize and live the Truth that everything is Him. But even Mentally understanding the Truth enables one proceed in the path till the Truth is experienced. To finish this point continuing that line;

‘But when the Spirit that is within us maketh for himself even a little difference in the Eternal, then he has fear, yea the Eternal himself becomes a terror!

This knowledge once understood even mentally, makes one steadfast in one’s path or quest for permanent Happiness irrespective of the experiences one undergoes in the interim till that Happiness is experienced forever.

The Path of Knowledge will also lead one to a love of the Lord but not necessarily as a separate existence. In the Path of Devotion, the fear (referred to earlier) was extinguished by one’s total identification with Him. The faith and love led to unification. Here it is an understanding and subsequent experience of finding Him within us and everywhere which allows one to reach permanent Happiness.

To summarize, this Path also leads one to Happiness with the primary focus being on understanding the Truth from within. There is no struggle, doubt or fear; only a surrender to the power within which then reveals Itself as the All. But the initial quest is by the Mind and the effort is of the Mind till it reaches a stage of being ready. Being ready for what? Again these words (from the Adoration of the Divine Mother again!) summarizes this best;

“To break earth’s seal of Ignorance and Death; His nature’s might seemed now an infant’s grasp. Heaven is too high for outstretched hands to seize. This light comes not by struggle or thought, In the minds silence the Transcendent acts”

In the Path of Knowledge one becomes Bliss or Happiness himself by moving above the Minds (nature’s tendencies) limited efforts and that happens when one allows the Eternal (Self or Transcendent) who is within one as also within all to stop being the witness alone but to step forward and Will the action for the Truth to be revealed. Then a permanent Happiness or Bliss becomes one’s Nature Itself.

Iran test-fires 4 missiles

A semi-official Iranian news agency says the military has test-fired four missiles during a military drill in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The report late Monday by Fars quoted Gen. Ali Fadavi of the powerful Revolutionary Guard as saying the missiles hit a “big target” the size of a warship and sunk it within 50 seconds.

It was the first report of an Iranian military exercise taking place simultaneously and close to U.S.-led joint naval manoeuvres in the Persian Gulf, including mine-sweeping drills.

The U.S. Navy claims the manoeuvres are not directly aimed at Iran, but the West and its regional allies have made clear they would react against attempts by Tehran to carry out threats to try to close critical Gulf oil shipping lanes in retaliation for tighter sanctions.

‘Just have to execute plans, going forward’

Darren Sammy stressed that the West Indies is prepared for the ICC World Twenty20’s Super Eights though both its Group B matches were marred by rain.

“The weather is something that you cannot control, and as professionals we got to make-do. We back ourselves to do well,” the West Indies captain said after inclement weather forced the abandonment of its contest against Ireland at the half-way stage.

The skipper also emphasised that his bowling unit would be in fine fettle during the tougher games.

“I believe that what happened against Australia was one-off. I back our bowlers to come good.

“We just got to execute our plans and restrict the other teams,” Sammy said.

Meanwhile Ireland’s captain William Porterfield said he felt that more matches for it in the ICC’s Future Tours Programme will help the emerging outfit gain more exposure.

Innings victory for Rest of India

The Hindu WORTHY CHAMPION: The Rest of India team, which inflicted a crushing defeat on Rajasthan to lift the Irani Cup. Photo; G.P. Sampath Kumar

Three suicidal run-outs hastens the end for Rajasthan

Rest of India, for the second year in a row, inflicted a crushing defeat on Rajasthan in the Irani Cup, the domestic season opener. At the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Monday, Rajasthan crumbled after some early doggedness to be bowled out for 275, losing by an innings and 79 runs in the last session of the fourth day.

The first innings lead of 354 runs was imposing enough and though the wicket tended to do a little in terms of bounce and turn there was no cause for alarm for the men in the middle.

But, the running between the wickets did not seem the Ranji Trophy champion’s strength. Or so it was given to believe.

Three suicidal run-outs by the top six in the order hastened the end. If opener Vineet Saxena and skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar ran themselves out going for non-existent runs when looking well settled, wicketkeeper-batsman Dishant Yagnik ambling for a third run could not beat Umesh Yadav’s throw from deep cover.

Resuming at 43 for one, both Kanitkar and Saxena played straight and without any flourish. But Saxena, turning one to square-leg, took off for a single and could not regain his crease, ending a 66-run second wicket partnership.

Defiant Bist

Bist, centurion in the first innings, looked compact in defence, punishing anything wayward and sought to defy the Rest attack going into lunch at 149 for two.

However, on resumption, things began to happen. Kanitkar (73) played Ojha to covers and took off for a non-existent run and could not beat Badrinath’s throw to wicketkeeper Karthik and the 95-run third wicket partnership came to an end.

Bist, who looked the most composed of the Rajasthan batsmen, failed to come down quickly to a delivery from Ojha that kept low when on 67 and then Yagnik ran himself out.

Harmeet bowls well

Harmeet Singh, the young left-arm spinner then ran through the tail. The Indian under-19 player had Rashmi Ranjan Parida, the last of the recognised batsmen, edging to Karthik behind the stumps.

He then forced Gajendra Singh to nick one to Rahane at slips before inducing both Madhur Khatri and Aniket Choudhary to hole out to Umesh Yadav in the deep as Rest completed an emphatic win.

M. Vijay, for his fine knock of 266, was adjudged the ‘Man-of-the-match’.

The scores:

Rajasthan — 1st innings: 253.

Rest of India — 1st innings: 607 for seven decl.

Rajasthan — 2nd innings: A. Lamba c Karthik b Ishant 4 (4b, 1x4), V. Saxena (run out) 18 (70b, 3x4), H. Kanitkar (run out) 73 (151b, 10x4), R. Bist b Ojha 67 (105b, 10x4), R.R. Churchill makes semifinals

Churchill Brothers produced an authoritative performance to ground 10-man Air India 4-0 in a Group B league encounter of the Federation Cup here at the Kanchanjungha Stadium on Monday.

Churchill Brothers, which remained unbeaten, topped the group and made it to the semifinals.

Needing a win to ensure its second semifinal entry in the history of the tournament, Churchill — thanks to a brilliant performance from its strikers — found goals at regular intervals to emerge as the deserving winner.

Henry Autchouet, Roberto Mendes Silva, Akram Moghrabi and Bikramjit Singh found the back of the net.

Red card for Fernandes

Churchill was further helped by the ejection of Air India captain Mickey Fernandes, who was shown a red card for a serious challenge on Beto in the 66th minute.

Churchill Brothers pressed from the start and got the breakthrough in the 22nd minute. Nigerian Henry reached to a floater from midfield and carefully protected the ball from the Air India defenders. He nodded the ball clear of an onrushing goalkeeper before slotting the ball with a deft flick.

After the break, Churchill opened up the Air India defence on couple of occasions but failed to score.

But in the 64th minute, playmaker Beto doubled the lead when he curled in a freekick past a diving Air India custodian Sukhwiner Singh.

Akram Moghrabi, who replaced Beto in the 73rd minute, headed in a cross from the flank in the 84th minute before Bikramjit Singh rounded off the scoring in the final minute of the regulation time.

Salgaocar survives

At Jamshedpur, the semifinal slots were finalised in both the groups. Defending champion Salgaocar SC joined the I-League champion and Group A topper Dempo SC in the last-four stage.

Playing the concluding Group D league round at the JRD Tata complex, Salgaocar survived a stiff challenge from Pune FC before beating it 2-1.

Churchill Brothers will now take on Group C topper, which will be decided on Tuesday, on Thursday.

Dempo SC meets Salgaocar SC in the other semifinal here on Friday.

Bagan wins

13-time champion Mohun Bagan beat Kolkata rival Mohammedan Sporting 2-1 in an inconsequential Group B league encounter.

Following a barren first half, striker Sabeeth Sathyan (50th) and midfielder Manish Maithani (53rd) struck within four minutes to give Bagan a 2-0 lead.

David Sunday (63rd) pulled one back for Mohammedan Sporting.

Mohun Bagan finished third with four points while Sporting came last with three points.

Protest

Meanwhile, a protest from Sporting Clube de Goa forced the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to make the final round matches of the Group C league a simultaneous affair.

The results:

At Siliguri:

Group B: Churchill Brothers 4 (Henry Autchouet 22, Roberto Mendes Silva 64, Akram Moghrabi 84, Bikramjit Singh 90) bt Air India 0.

Mohun Bagan 2 (Sabeeth Sathyan 50, Manish Maithani 53) bt Mohammedan Sporting 1 (David Sunday 63).

At Jamshedpur:

Group D: Salgaocar 2 (Luciano Sabrosa 7, Anthony D’Souza 27) bt Pune FC 1 (Douhou Pierre 12).

Prayag United FC 2 (Mohammad Rafique 2, 14) bt United Sikkim FC 0.

Tuesday’s matches:

At Siliguri: Group C: East Bengal vs Kalighat MS; Sporting Clube deGoa vs ONGC FC (both at 3 p.m.).

Air India wallops Rajasthan 9-0

The Hindu BORED! Air India 'keeper Gurpreet Singh didn't have much work to do as most of action took place in Rajasthan half. Photo: K. Bhagya Prakash

Air India walloped Rajasthan 9-0 to register a second successive win in the 2nd Hockey India Senior National championships here on Monday. During what was a vastly lopsided Pool E game at the KSHA Stadium, the veteran Sameer Dad scored twice before goals for six other players saw Rajasthan embarrassed.

If Air India had faced some resistance from Madhya Pradesh on Sunday night, there was none the following afternoon. Rajasthan saw negligibly little of the ball, and spent the bulk of the 70 minutes camped inside its own half. The only shot on goal came from a penalty corner in the opening few seconds. That opportunity was, however, passed up.

It was all one-way traffic thereafter as Air India won four penalty corners in quick succession. All four were fluffed, to the vocal dismay of coach Dhanraj Pillay, but the opening goal was not much longer in arriving.

Running down the inside-left channel, Dad fired in from a tight angle in the 22nd minute. Prabodh Tirkey scored seven minutes later, before Sandeep Singh’s drag flick sent Air India 3-0 into the break.

The airmen could have finished better, and by stronger opposition will probably be punished for it, but on this occasion, there was nothing to fret about. Two minutes into the second half, V.S. Vinaya’s drive from the right deflected in off a Rajasthan stick. The right-half would get his own name on the scoresheet a minute from time. In between, there were goals for Pradhan Somanna, Birendra Lakra and Arjun Halappa as Air India completed an effortless win.

TN thrashes Gujarat

Over at the MEG grounds, Tamil Nadu handed out a 25-1 mauling to Gujarat in Pool G while Odisha, Punjab and Haryana too recorded emphatic victories. Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh officially pulled out of the tournament, meaning Pool C will now be treated as a four-team group.

The results: Pool A: Haryana 8 (Didar Singh 4, 45, Arjun Antil 34, Bharat Chikara 49, Naveen Antil 51, Gagandeep Singh 59, Karamjit Singh 65, Sardar Singh 70) bt Bengal 0; Bhopal 2 (Affan Yousuf 22, 63) bt Maharashtra 1 (Narad Bahadur 44).

Pool C: Punjab 12 (Gurjinder Singh 2, Akashdeep Singh 10, 41, 50, 52, 69, Ravipal Singh 11, 23, Sarvanjit Singh 17, 26, 62, Talwinder Singh 59) bt Chhattisgarh 0.

Pool E: Air India 9 (Sameer Dad 22, 47, Prabodh Tirkey 29, Sandeep Singh 34, OG 37, Pradhan Somanna 44, Birendra Lakra 56, Arjun Halappa 67, V.S. Nizamuddin 56, Amit Kumar Singh 57, Vikas Choudhary 64) bt Nagaland 2 (Keduneizo 17, Md. Asif 66).

Pool G: Odisha 17 (A.M. Tirkey 11, Sunil Toppo 12, 31, 32, John Toppno 18, Ignacius Toppo 29, Deepak Kullu 30, 32, Mikhal Barla 33, 46, Aijub Ekka 37, 40, David Minz 43, Stanli Minz 48, Bipin Kerketta 49, 63, Dilip Toppo 70) bt Kerala 0; Tamil Nadu 25 (Damu 6, 28, 30, 49, Rupinderpal Singh 11, 27, 56, 58, 69, Gunasekar 13, Sivamani 16, Kannan 19, 46, 51, 63, 68, V. Siena shocks Inter Milan

Lazio joined a host of other teams which had slipped up on Sunday when it suffered its first Italian League defeat of the season as Marco Boriello gave a gutsy Genoa side a 1-0 win at the Olympic Stadium.

Juventus, which won the league ahead of AC Milan last season, is now the only team to have a 100 per cent record.

Earlier, Napoli’s three-match winning run came to an end when it was held at Catania, a fate also suffered by Sampdoria which was held to a 1-1 home draw by Torino.

Juventus’s bid to defend its title was also reinforced after both Milan clubs suffered defeat on Sunday. Inter remained in sixth place but is now six points off the pace after a stunning 2-0 defeat at the San Siro to bottom of the table Siena.

Simone Vergassola silenced the home fans with a 73rd minute opener and Francesco Valiani came off the bench to inflict further damage with a goal on the stroke of full-time.

Inter’s second defeat at home, following a 3-1 reverse to Roma, is likely to prompt suggestions there is a curse at the San Siro: so far this season, neither Inter nor AC Milan has won there. By far the biggest shock of the weekend was AC Milan’s 2-1 away defeat to Udinese, a third league reverse which leaves the seven-time European champion 15th.

Despite Italy under-21 international Stephan El Sharaway levelling Swedish striker Mathias Ranegie’s 40th minute opener 10 minutes after the restart, the visitor endured a catastrophic end to the match.

Milan’s Colombian defender Cristian Zapata was sent off, allowing Antonio di Natale to score Udinese’s second from the spot. The visitor’s hopes of levelling suffered a blow seven minutes from time when it was reduced to nine players after Kevin Prince Boateng was red-carded.

The results: Italian League: Sampdoria 1 (Pozzi 84-pen) drew with Torino 1 (Bianchi 69-pen); Udinese 2 (Ranegie 40, di Natale 68-pen) bt AC Milan 1 (El Shaarawy 54); Catania 0 drew with Napoli 0; Atalanta 1 (Raimondi 88) bt Palermo 0; Bologna 1 (Gilardino 9) drew with Pescara 1 (Quintero 41); Inter Milan 0 lost to Siena 2 (Vergassola 72, Valiani 90+2); Lazio 0 lost to Genoa 1 (Borriello 79); Cagliari vs Roma (postponed).

Spanish League: Real Mallorca 2 (Victor 8, Arizmendi 55) bt Valencia 0; Levante 2 (Barkero 70-pen, Martins 86) bt Real Sociedad 1 (Zurutuza 23); Atletico Madrid 2 (Godin 31, Falcao 45-pen) bt Valladolid 1 (Bueno 55); Athletic Bilbao 0 drew with Malaga 0.

The traditional art needs to be patronised by getting exposed to the aesthetic beauty of the centuries old dance form-Kuchipudi. Stressing on its global recognition, the third International Kuchipudi Dance convention with the theme-‘Yuvatha Kuchipudi Bhavitha’, will be held in Hyderabad at Gachibowli Sports Complex starting from December 23, said SiliconAndhra founder and chairman Anand Kuchibhotla.

The conventions help in leaving better impact among youth, encouraging them to pursue the art at a young age and retaining its popularity, he said at the fourth poster launch meet held in the city on Saturday. The objective is to create nation-wide awareness on Kuchipudi and to unite thousands of talented dancers at one place, he said. “Every two years we organise such programme to provide livelihood to the traditional dancers and create a platform to exhibit the art. More than 6, 000 dancers across the world will be attending the convention,” he said.

Famous Kuchipudi dancers like Sobha Naidu, Raja Reddy, Radha Reddy, Yamini Krishnamurthy and Bala Kondala Rao and Bharani Shenkar are expected to participate in the international convention. Paper presentation, workshops, seminar, panel discussions and lecture demonstrations form a part of the three-day celebrations. The city’s Kuchipudi dancer Bharani Shenkar and Rachana, Visakha Humour Club secretary Nanduri Prabhakar and others were present during the poster launch.

On the concluding day, a group of 4,000 dancers will be performing Brunda Natyam comprising ‘Brahmanjali’ and ‘Dasavatharam’. Participants should register their names, paying a fee of Rs. 600 on or before October 30. Registrations will be accepted up to November 30 with an extra fee of Rs.100. VSP trade unions plan 48-hour strike

All the trade unions of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Saturday served a notice on the management to go on strike on October 12 and 13 in protest against the decision to go ahead with disinvestment of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited. The notice was served under sub-section (1) of Section 22 of Industrial Dispute Act, 1947. RINL, the holding company of VSP, is likely to go for an IPO on October 16.

Signed by all the union representatives, the notice copy was addressed to RINL Chairman-cum-Managing Director A.P. Choudhary. INTUC is also a signatory to the notice.

This is for the first time that the unions have called for a 48-hour strike in protest against, what they termed, attempts to hand over RINL to private hands.

Plea to Purandeswari

Later in a representation to Union Minister of State for HRD D. Purandeswari and Joint Collector Praveen Kumar, the trade union representatives sought their intervention to stop disinvestment.

They told the Minister that VSP was a symbol of pride for the people of Andhra Pradesh.

“It was set up after Visakha Ukku Andhrula Hakku agitation. Hence, the plan for disinvestment should be dropped,” the leaders told the Minister, Purandeswari, who promised them that she would convey their sentiments to the government.
