Dressed to kill

Halloween has become an excuse to dress in outrageous costumes and dance to tunes mixed by DJs in swanky nightclubs, writes Jaideep Deo Bhanj

October is packed with festivals that give youngsters a break from their hectic studies and work, to enjoy time with their family. To make the most of the festive spirit, youngsters are adding a westernised twist by celebrating Halloween, close on the heels of Navratri. Far removed from the traditional celebrations of Halloween in the West, here the youth see it as an excuse to dress in outrageous costumes and dance to tunes mixed by DJs in swanky nightclubs.

Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, is an annual festival celebrated on October 31 in most countries in the West. It is celebrated a day before All Saints’ Day. It was originally influenced by western European harvest festivals and also with pagan rituals related to the dead. Children go from house to house dressed in costumes asking ‘trick or treats’. A popular practice is to light bonfires and carve pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns with various facial expressions. Some people like to tell horror stories, watch horror movies and visit places reputed to be haunted.

Social media

With the increase in the number of students studying abroad and the influence of social media, Halloween is well known among college students all over the world. A number of cafes in Vizag have put up posters advertising Halloween parties.

The festival has also been made popular by the Harry Potter series, in which Halloween is celebrated with a grand feast at Hogwarts. Also, there are a number of horror movies centred on the theme of Halloween.

Faraz Ahmed, who works at a multinational company, was shocked when he saw photos of his friend who was working abroad dressed as a vampire at a party on Facebook. “It is through social networking sites that we in India come to know about the culture of a foreign country. I am now eager to attend a costume party myself and have been planning a wild costume,” he says, all excited.

Dhruvraj Singh, who studied in an international school in Zambia for a few years, says it was a fun experience to get involved in Halloween celebrations in his school and it was interesting to see how innovative students got with their costumes. He is excited at the prospect of attending a Halloween party in Vizag this week. Rahul Dodka, who runs an event management company, is organising a Halloween party in the city. He says this is the first time that a Halloween theme party is being organised in Vizag and his company is trying to target college students.

“We are redoing the décor at a club in the city with drapes and neon graffiti to create the perfect ambience.

Those attending the party will have to be dressed in costumes. For those who do not turn up in costume we will be providing masks at the venue,” he adds. A look at the event’s Facebook page shows that the party is creating quite a buzz.

From its pagan origins to ostentatious parties, Halloween has come a long way. Here in Vizag it’s just another excuse for youngsters to have some more fun.

Nigerian northern state governor’s plane crashes

The governor of a northern Nigerian state was injured along with five other people after an aircraft piloted by him crashed at an airport in a neighbouring province.

Danbaba Suntai, the 51-year-old governor of Taraba state, his two aides and three other passengers who were with him in the aircraft also survived the crash yesterday and are being treated in a hospital.

Mohammed Ibrahim, the state police spokesman of the neighbouring Adamawa state where the plane crashed, said Suntai and two security aides were being treated at the main hospital in Yola.

A statement from the Nigerian ministry of aviation said, “an aircraft, Cessna 208 with 6 souls on board including crew, operated by the Taraba State Government departed Jalingo, Taraba State for Yola on Thursday (yesterday) evening and reported contact with the Yola Control Tower.”

“The pilot subsequently lost contact with Yola Control Tower and subsequent effort to raise the aircraft failed.

Search & Rescue was immediately activated and site of incident located with all victims alive with various degrees of injuries,” the statement said.

It said the victims were evacuated to the hospital for treatment pending further investigation of the incident.

India important for Afghan stability: Panetta

U.S. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta, left, accompanied by Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey, gestures during their joint news conference at the Pentagon on Thursday. Panetta said the U.S. military did not intervene during the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya last month because it was over before the U.S. has sufficient information on which to act. Emphasising India’s cooperation for developing stability in Afghanistan, U.S. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said here that India is an important country in the region and whatever India can do to bring stability in Afghanistan would be very helpful.

“India is an important country in that region. And obviously, whatever India can do to try to help develop stability in that region, both working with Afghanistan as well as Pakistan, would be very helpful to the prospects of peace in the future,” Mr. Panetta told reporters yesterday during a Pentagon news conference.

Talking about Afghanistan, Mr. Panetta said their goal has always been an Afghanistan that can govern and secure itself and that can be a sovereign and independent country in that important region of the world and one that is sufficiently secure so that al-Qaeda never again finds a safe heaven from which to conduct attacks on our country or anyplace else.

“That’s the goal. And that’s the kind of Afghanistan that I think we’re trying to work towards and I think it’s the kind of Afghanistan the Afghan people want to have for the future as well,” Mr. Panetta said in response to a question.

Benghazi attack

He said Pentagon decided against sending U.S. troops to Benghazi during the attack on the U.S. Consulate as too little information and intelligence was available and it would have put lives of U.S. troops at risk.

“We quickly responded in terms of deploying forces to the region. We had fast platoons in the region. We had ships that we had deployed off of Libya. We were prepared to respond to any contingency, and certainly had forces in place to do that,” Mr. Panetta said.

“But the basic principle is that you don’t deploy forces into harms’ way without knowing what’s going on, without having some real time information about what’s taking place," Mr Panetta added.

With renewed driver’s licence Obama casts vote

The woman election official asked for Mr Obama's licence for identification purposes

Barack Obama created history when he went to a polling booth in his home town of Chicago to cast his vote, over 12 days ahead of the November 6 elections, thus becoming the first U.S. President to vote early.

Amidst his hectic electioneering schedule, Mr Obama flew in from Richmond in Virginia to cast his vote at the Martin Luther King Community Center in his home town of Chicago.

As Mr Obama entered the voting he greeted everybody and said it is exciting to get to vote early. After he shook the hands of all the poll workers and handed forms to one of them.

“I think I’ve got paperwork I need to sign in front of you,” he told an elderly woman handling his forms.

“This is the first time a president ever going to be early voting,” he said while waiting. “That’s pretty exciting,” Mr Obama said.

After that the woman election official asked for his driver’s licence for identification purposes.

“Oh, you’re right,” he said, reaching into his pocket.

“I’ve got my driver’s licence. Now ignore the fact that there’s no gray hair in that picture,” he said. Following this the election official asked him a question about paperwork, something about whether it was the right forms, it seemed, according to a White House pool report. “I assume it is,” he said. “I hope so. If not, this will be really embarrassing.”

While waiting, he asked if they had been getting a lot of early voters and was told they were. “It makes such a difference,” he said. Then he remarked, “I’m just glad I renewed my driver’s licence.”

According to the pool report, the woman who took his license held it up and gave it the sort of sceptical examination a TSA officer would. Mr Obama laughed. “Did you see that?” he said, then mimicked her looking over the licence.

Thereafter, Mr. Obama was brought over to one of the voting stations. It took him about three or four minutes to go through the apparently long ballot, including down-ballot races.
