This festival strengthens the bond between sisters and brothers and makes the day a special with their sweet remembrances. On this day brothers promise to take care of their sisters and protect from the vagaries of life.

Raksha bandhan’, a festival that strengthens the bond between sisters and brothers, was celebrated with fervour and gaiety all over the district on Thursday.

The festival, celebrated on a full moon day (Pournami) in Sravana Maasam witnessed sisters tying the sacred thread (rakhi) around the wrists of their brothers with bonhomie. They applied ‘sindhuram’ on the foreheads and offered sweets to them.

They also performed special pujas in temples for the wellbeing of their brothers. The one-town area, where the north Indian communities live in large numbers, wore a festive look right from dawn. Heavy rush was seen at kiosks selling colourful rakhis of various shapes and sizes. Sweetmeat stalls witnessed heavy turnout of customers especially women and girls.

“This festival strengthens the bond between sisters and brothers and makes the day a special with their sweet remembrances. On this day brothers promise to take care of their sisters and protect from the vagaries of life. It also reflects the family values,” said a young girl.

The festival also brings cheers to womenfolk as they are flooded with gifts of all kinds from their loved brothers. Some, whose brothers stay far away, took the help of the couriers to send their precious rakhis.
