The investigation into the scholarship scam in the district has found that two officials in the Adi Dravida Welfare (ADW) Department are involved, District Collector J. Kumaragurubaran told The Hindu on Monday. “They have been identified as the ADW Officer, who is in the rank of a Deputy Collector, and a former Superintendent of the Department here who was transferred to Salem recently”, the Collector said.
It is learnt that the two officials played a key role in the distribution of scholarship for children of conservancy workers in which Rs. 81 lakh was distributed to children of 99 schools in the district for the academic years 2010-11 and 2011-12. An inquiry conducted by the Collector revealed that only 1,016 of the total 2,784 applications submitted during the two years were of genuine beneficiaries.
“Direct action cannot be initiated against them as one of them is a Revenue official while the other is in the rank of a Deputy Collector. On Monday, we sent a report of the findings of the inquiry and recommendations of action to be taken to the Revenue Secretary and a copy of the same to the Secretaries for ADW and Education and Commissioners of ADW and Revenue”, he added.
The Collector said action would be initiated against them based on the directions from the officials in Chennai.
