Calicut varsity asked to defer interview

A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday pulled up the Calicut University for making the Vice Chancellor chairman of the board for selecting and interviewing candidates for the post of last grade employees such as peons and watchmen in the university.

The Bench comprising Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair and Justice C.K. Abdul Rahim asked the university to immediately amend its regulation making the Vice Chancellor the head of the selection committee.

The court said that it was amused to find that the panel was headed by the Vice Chancellor. The court observed that it was high time the Vice Chancellor should be spared from “this kind of petty work of interviewing” candidates for the posts of peons and watchmen.

The court said that the university should delegate the power to some middle-level administrative officers in the university for the selection process and if required some members of the syndicate could be included in the interview board.

The court observed that the whole exercise of the selection board chaired by the Vice Chancellor to select 90 candidates from a list of 3,400 applicants, that too by interviewing 100 people a day, was a sheer waste of time.

The court directed the university to defer the interview by two months and recall the interview cards sent to the candidates.

The court opined that the short list could be reduced to 360 from 3,400. The court also asked the university to issue public notice on postponing the interviews.
