Matchless glory

The uniqueness of God’s relationship with the entire created universe lies in the fact that He is the indwelling presence in all beings and yet is untouched by them. Explaining this rareness to Arjuna, the Lord points out that though this entire universe is pervaded by Him in a manner that is not manifest to the senses, and is within Him, He is not in any of it. His presence is the most subtle of all creation, and He creates and also sustains and destroys. The Lord uses Nature to create beings according to their individual past Karma. Just as an impartial judge pronounces judgment after examining the case in detail, the Lord remains independent and is merely responsible for allotting the fruits of the actions and attitude of every individual, said Swami Gautamananda in a lecture. He has no personal equation in the affairs of the world.

This means that while He creates beings in different contexts with desires, etc, He is not creating their Karma. A bank will be ready to process a request for withdrawal of money only on the basis of one’s deposit; our life now and hereafter is fashioned by our individual Karma and the Lord merely assigns the rewards for all the actions of the individual. The inner self in all beings is a part of the Eternal Lord that has assumed a different identity in the form of a name due to the encrustation around it. Each being assumes a different entity because of the different body, mind, etc, it acquires at the time of birth.

The Lord maintains that the desire generated in the infinite beings is the cause of creation. Suppose a musician has a dream of making it big in life and dies before his ambition is attained. He will be born again and again until his desire is fulfilled. All of us are born in the same world, but our birth is dependent on our desires and past Karma.

The knowledge of the mystery of creation and the pervading Maya over which the Lord is the sole ruler is the visa for the attainment of the eternal joy of liberation. But one has to yearn for the higher life and renounce the worldly cycle of birth. The real nature of the eternal I which is the essence of consciousness and bliss is not recognised and the ego in the individual is instead given prominence.
