New loop opened on Barapulla elevated road

A second connecting loop to the Barapulla elevated road in the Capital from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg to Sarai Kale Khan was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday.

The new loop would provide quick access to the eastern side of Delhi from both Central and South Delhi areas. In doing so, it is also expected to reduce traffic congestion on Ring Road, Mathura Road and other arterial roads.

The completion of the loop has also made the Barapulla elevated corridor more accessible to those working and living around JLN Stadium and CGO Complex.

Earlier, the first loop connecting Sarai Kale Khan to Lala Lajpat Rai Marg was opened to traffic in March 2012.

While the Barapulla project had come under the scanner of the investigating agencies after some audit reports pointed to corrupt practices in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games, the Delhi Government claimed that it has been able to save Rs.65 crore in commissioning the entire elevated road from Sarai Kale Khan to JLN Stadium and in providing the connectivity to Lala Lajpat Rai Marg.

The Government said the while Rs.498 crore was sanctioned for the main corridor and the connecting loops and another Rs.51 crore was sanctioned for shifting of various services, the project has been commissioned at a total cost of Rs.485 crore, resulting in the saving of nearly Rs.65 crore.

As part of the expansion of the project, the second phase would start in January 2013 and the work would involve an 8 km mostly-elevated road from JLN Stadium to INA with two connecting roads to Ring Road and one at Thyagraj Stadium. The Government is also working on extending the Barapulla elevated road up to Mayur Vihar under Phase-III and for this a study is in progress.
