Major arterial stretch caves in near the Model House
A part of the road covering a drain that runs underneath the major arterial stretch between Panjagutta and Khairatabad junction caved in near the Model House leading to massive traffic jams stretching as far as Balanagar on the western side on Friday. Traffic chaos was reported on all roads connecting the major thoroughfare as the motorists tried to navigate themselves through alternate routes.
The cave in on the road stretch in front of the Model House was reported in the early hours of Friday as a heavy vehicle moved over it. Though the vehicle was pulled out by a crane, the morning traffic went haywire as anxious motorists crammed at all available road space in their eagerness to squeeze through the available carriage way.
Incidentally, repair works were taken up at the caved in stretch just seven months ago. The incident indicates that sub-standard work was done, red-faced authorities admitted. While the police struggled to manage traffic, the civic authorities were clueless on the reasons for this collapse.
Tough time
After the road caved in, at least 10 policemen regulated traffic at the Model House during the daytime. By afternoon, authorities began diverting traffic at KCP island on Khairatabad side and at Ameerpet junction on the other side.
Buses were operated via Raj Bhavan, while in the return direction the buses were allowed to go towards Ameerpet junction, Greenlands and Raj Bhavan.
Senior officials said diversions will be in force on till repair works were completed. The GHMC officials are still ascertaining the reasons for collapse.
“This portion of the road gave in because of the soil erosion and not due to crumbling of the concrete slab. We will dig up the whole area and try to find the source from where water is seeping,” explained GHMC Engineer-in-Chief Dhan Singh.
According to the GHMC maps, there is no sewerage line passing through the spot. As the area is prone to water logging, there were plans to lay stormwater drains through that area, he said. But even after the clearance was given for the work a year ago, which cost Rs.2 crore, stormwater drains have not been put in place, he explained.
“There has been a lapse in the completion of works and we are looking into the possibility of rectifying this lapse by completing the work on stormwater drain now,” he said.
