Renal clinic thrice a week now at IOG

A renal clinic will be opened in the outpatient department of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (IOG) on Tuesday. The clinic will be managed by three doctors from the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. It will be inaugurated by the Minister for Health and Family Welfare V.S. Vijay.

“IOG treats around 250 pregnant women in the outpatient department every day. At least 10 per cent of them suffer from pregnancy-induced hypertension. While 20 of them can be treated by general physicians, five patients with complicated kidney diseases are referred to GH,” said V. Kanagasabai, dean of GH. He pointed out that these patients can now be saved the trouble of travelling in their condition.

“Since the clinic is being opened at a hospital where the patients are women, they will be far more comfortable coming here for treatment instead of at the GH,” added S. Jaya, the director-in-charge at IOG.

Dr. Kanagasabai noted that apart from pregnant women, 15 to 20 per cent of the other gynaecological patients also suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus which can affect the kidneys.

All such patients will no longer need to visit GH and can be treated at the clinic in IOG. The clinic will be held thrice a week between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
