Pranav Vijay checkmated top seed and joint leader Aravindh Chithambaram in the eighth round of the Ramco National under-13 chess championship at the Nehru Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.
Visakh leads with 7.5 points and is closely followed by Pranav Vijay on seven points.
Five players — Aradhya Garg, Muthaiah, Aravindh, Ritviz and Grahesh — share the third spot with 6.5 points.
Aravindh allowed Pranav to attack a bishop and a pawn simultaneously as early as move eleven. Having won a pawn, Pranav played aggressively and won in 45 moves with the black pieces.
Visakh won a rook for bishop following careless play by Aadhityaa. Visakh who converted this advantage moved into sole lead with three rounds still to be played.
National under-11 girls’ champion Vaishali has won eight games in a row and has widened her lead to 1.5 points after a 37-move victory over Tejaswini Sagar.
Vaishali created space by advancing her pawns and won a rook for her knight on move 32 after which the verdict was clear.
Shweta Priyadarshini and D Meera are in the joint second place with 6.5 points. Meera won a knight on move 30 to defeat Manjula in 53 moves. Shweta won two pieces for a rook on move 13 but converted this advantage only after 65 long moves.
