Theme: Time to look a little away from mainstreams at something that delights as well as comes in real handy at various occasions. The handicraft industry, though slightly away from swanky IT parks in big cities, can boast of a big national as well as international consumer base. Let’s delve a little deeper and take a look at the people and the marvels they create.
Day 1. Debate: The handicraft industry is not supported/promoted well.
Day 2. In person: Ever attended or read about a handicraft exhibition or manufacturing unit? Tell us briefly what you felt and what should be done to improve the prospects of the industry.
Day 3. Moulding masterpieces: Do some research and find out more about the articles manufactured, materials used and the methods followed in turning out handcrafted articles for usage or show. Write a brief article/report on your research.
Day 4. Distinct touch: Most states in India have something special to offer when it comes to handicrafts. Special silk saris of Bengal or bamboo works of MP are well known and so are the other distinct products from various states. Find out more about the specialties of a particular state and talk about them briefly.
Day 5. Going abroad: A significant chunk of our handicrafts are exported to various foreign countries. Tell us more about which countries are our main customers and what kind of products are exported the most.
Discussion: What, according to you, will it take to make more people (especially from the cities) consider a career in handicraft in India?
