Jail terms for Shobha John, others




The Ernakulam Additional Sessions Court on Wednesday awarded varying jail terms to eight accused, including the woman key accused, in the Sabarimala temple priest assault and blackmail case.


Seven-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.5,000 each were awarded to first accused Shobha John, third accused Anil Kumar, and fourth accused Bechu Rehman under Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and under Section 395 (dacoity) respectively of the Indian Penal Code. The court also awarded two-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs.6,000 each to them under Section 385 (putting person in fear of injury) and Section 354 respectively.


Abdul Sathar, Majeed, and Shereef alias Umbu were sentenced to a total of 12-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs.11,000 each. The court also awarded four-year imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs.5,000 on Bechu Rehman. The judge ordered that all the convicts should undergo the imprisonment concurrently.


The tenth and eleventh accused, Asees and Biji Peter, were awarded four-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.5,000 under Section 412 (dishonestly receiving property stolen).


The case against Binil Kumar alias Bijil of Vellarada, Ashif, and Abdul Sahad, absconding accused, had been split up.


According to the prosecution, Sobha, along with the other accused, had hatched a plot and threatened Tantri Kandararu Mohanararu at gun point at her flat here and forcibly took away about 40 sovereigns of gold from him on July 23, 2006. They also photographed him with a woman. Mohanararu was sacked as Sabarimala Tantri after the incident.
