International symposium on ginger on at Calicut varsity
The sixth international symposium on the Zingiberaceae family began at the University of Calicut at Tenhipalam here on Monday. The global ginger meet is being held for the first time in India.
Calicut University Vice-Chancellor M. Abdul Salam and renowned taxonomist from Smithsonian Institution, the U.S., W.J. Kress jointly inaugurated the symposium organised by the Department of Botany, Calicut University, in collaboration with the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy.
Dr. Salam said that the university would do everything possible to popularise scientific research. He called upon the research scholars to carry out studies in such a way as to benefit the farmers.
Dr. Kress released a book authored by renowned Norwegian botanist Axel D. Polsen.
Over 100 papers will be presented at the four-day symposium.
Pro Vice-Chancellor K. Ravindranath released the abstracts of the papers being presented at the meet. K.V. Mohanan, organising committee chairman, presided.
Indian Institute of Spices Research director M. Anandaraj, India government’s Additional Horticulture Commissioner Tamil Selvan, and P.V. Madhusoodhanan from Malabar Botanical Garden spoke. M. Sabu, head of the Department of Botany, welcomed the gathering. A.K. Pradeep, organising committee joint secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.
