Hunt on for man who fired gun in firm

The police are on the look-out for a man who fired a gun inside a firm in Ennore on Friday night. Nobody was injured in the incident.

According to the police, Arun of Vyasarpadi owned a private mill in Ennore Sadayan Kuppam and had hired a relative, Nandu from Rajasthan, as his firm’s manager. A few years ago, he sold the company to Senthil Kumar. But Nandu continued as the manager of the firm.

“But Nandu was found guilty of misappropriating company funds to the tune of Rs 3.5 lakh and fired from the job,” said Kumaravel, assistant commissioner of police, Ennore.

Nandu suspected the role of a company supervisor behind his exit. On Friday night, he and a friend, Durgakanth from Bihar, got drunk and landed up at the factory. Nandu threatened the labourers against coming for work and then fired at a wall before fleeing. “The workers said Nandu used a small gun that fitted in the palm,” said R. Alagesan, inspector of police, Sathangadu.

A complaint was filed on Saturday. “The damage to the wall was minimal. It looked as if someone had hit it with a marble,” said a police officer. A case was registered under various sections of the IPC including attempt to murder.

After the incident, Nandu went into hiding, the police said. “We have formed three special teams to nab him. We are interrogating his friends. He did not have a house to stay in and lived in a godown in Tiruvottiyur,” said Mr. Kumaravel.

Police say Nandu may have used a country gun smuggled in from Bihar.

“In 2010, the police seized three guns from Ennore that were smuggled from Bihar with the help of a truck driver who used to travel between the States. In 2008, an anti-social element by the name of Kuthirai Venkatesan was nabbed from north Chennai and found in possession of a country-made gun with six rounds of ammunition,” a police officer said.

Most smugglers take the help of truck drivers. “The truck drivers are informed in advance and they sneak in the weapons along with the goods transported in the truck. The price varies from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 40,000. But the guns can be used just a few times,” the officer said.

Country-made guns are like air pistols as they have very less velocity. “Their range is minimal. If fired from a distance, it will cause minimum impact,” he said.
