Police rough up vendor, pregnant wife

A vendor and his pregnant wife were on Friday allegedly roughed up and threatened by police personnel after the couple insisted on lodging a complaint over a theft in their house.

The incident comes a day after a constable was suspended for assaulting and allegedly attempting to run over a vendor here.

According to Sajjan Lal Jaiswal, his wife Savitri was allegedly pushed to the ground by the police after an argument over the four-week-old theft.

Ms. Savitri was immediately taken to a private clinic, where an ultrasound was conducted.

On Friday, a group of locals, including activists, trade organisation members and women’s group members carried placards and gheraoed the offices of the Senior Superintendent of Police and Deputy Inspector General.

Police said the matter was under investigation.

On August 18, a police constable allegedly beat up a fruit vendor and attempted to run him over with his bike. He has been suspended and a case has been lodged against him.

Visiting card facility

Taking note of the growing cases of complaints against police personnel, Allahabad Senior Superintendent of Police Mohit Agarwal recently introduced a “visiting card” identity facility for all constables and additional Superintendents of Police in the city.
