Grandmasters G.N. Gopal and Neelotpal Das, and International Master Swapnil Dhopade jumped into the lead after the second round of the Tata National premier chess tournament at the Khudiram indoor hall on Tuesday. All three had two points.
Gopal won an interesting game with the white pieces against GM Sundarajan Kidambi in French Tarrasch. Despite a few complications in the middle game, Gopal’s accurate moves helped him win in 28 moves.
The lone woman in the fray, WGM Mary Ann Gomes, went down to GM Neelotpal Das in a Reti Opening. Mary’s weak opening play allowed Das to strengthen his position and the latter then had no difficulty in winning a point.
Bitan holds Thipsay
Local lad Bitan Banerjee held veteran Grandmaster Praveen Thipsay to a draw in an advanced variation of French Defence. Banerjee sacrificed an exchange to complicate things in the middle game.
He, however, mishandled the position and allowed Thipsay to enjoy a slight advantage in a difficult end-game. The veteran, however, missed a winning chance and signed the peace treaty.
In other games, IM Swayams Mishra shared the honours with GM Abhijit Kunte, Sagar Shah held GM Deepan Chakkravarthy and Sasikant Kutwal drew with GM Dibyendu Barua.
