If you have any opportunity to open Kannada schools, bring it to our notice and we will try set up more Kannada schools."
Kannada-medium schools in the State will not be closed; the government will look for opportunities to set up more Kannada-medium schools, said Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar here on Thursday.
He was speaking after releasing 56 Kannada books at a function organised by Sapna Book House to mark Rajyotsava. He said: “I want to reiterate that Kannada-medium schools will not be closed. If you have any opportunity to open Kannada schools, bring it to our notice and we will try set up more Kannada schools.”
He said that in the 2012-2013 budget, Rs. 269 crore has been allotted for literary and cultural activities. The Chief Minister praised the efforts of the book store for organising the function and brining together Kannada literary scholars.
Mr. Shettar felicitated 56 authors for their contribution to the growth of Kannada literature.
Among those felicitated were Chandrashekar Kambar, K.S. Nisar Ahmed, Chandrashekar Patil, H.S. Venkateshmurthy, Hampana, Kamala Hampana, Sumateendra Nadig, Mallepuram G. Venkatesh, the former Minister Mumtaz Ali Khan, Doddarange Gowda, L.S. Seshagiri Rao, C.P. Krishnakumar and M. Chidanandamurthy.
Some of the books that were released included U.R. Anantmurthy’s Sahitya Vimarshe, Dr. Kambar’s Marikadu, this year’s Rajyotsava Award winner C.V. Kirimani’s Cheluva Kannada and Limca Book of Records holder Nagaraj Kote’s Hani Hani Kahani.
Stating that it was a proud moment for the book house to conduct the programme, its managing director Nitin Shah said that they would organise the event next year as well. He added, “Since its inception in 1967, Sapna Book House has published 4,000 Kannada books and our store offers more than 40,000 Kannada books for sale.”
Lexicographer G. Venkatasubbaiah and Bangalore South MP Ananth Kumar were present.
Discount
Sapna Book House will offer a discount up to 15 per cent on all Kannada books from November 1 to November 30. For purchase above Rs. 150, customers can get a membership card which will entitle them to a 10 per cent discount on all Kannada books throughout the year.
