Seam bowler Shaminda Eranga claimed two wickets as Sri Lanka limited New Zealand to 80—3 at lunch on the opening day of the first Test Saturday.
Openers Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum looked steady, sharing 29 runs after New Zealand captain Ross Taylor won the toss and elected to bat first at Galle International Stadium.
Eranga halted New Zealand’s progress when he removed Guptill for 11 and No. 3 batsman Kane Williamson for a duck in the next over, both caught at slip in the space of three deliveries.
McCullum was 38 not out at the break sharing an unbroken 40 runs for the fourth wicket with Daniel Flynn (21 not out)
Eranga had the best figures 2—22, while Nuwan Kulasekara had 1—26.
