History repeated itself at the finals of the 13th edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz held in Kamarajar Arangam in the city on Friday.

Class IX students Aditchandra and Ganesh D. from Loyola School, Thiruvananthapuram, beat five other national finalists by a wide margin to become the winners and receive their well-deserved prize from the chief guest, cricketer and former selector of BCCI, Krishnamachari Srikkanth.

Interestingly, he was also the chief guest at the quiz’s inaugural edition in 2000 which was won by a team from the same school.

Since then the quiz, a newspaper in education initiative, has only grown in popularity and scale to become India’s largest inter-school live quiz, pointed out quizmaster V.V. Ramanan, who was at his best hosting the event and dishing out a volley of questions ranging from the regular to audio and video formats.

After the Chennai regional round, which saw a record participation of 876 teams for the prelims, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, the winners of the regional finals, joined the five teams on stage for the grand finale.

The other teams were: Sri Vidya Mandir Matriculation Higher Secondary School (Salem), Vidya Niketan Public School (Coimbatore), Jeevana School (Madurai) and Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya (Kochi) besides defending champions Loyola School who were leading the points table from word go!

Like in the past years, this year too, the quiz was played on a buzzer using a numbered matrix with the picture of a celebrity behind it. As the teams correctly answered a question pertaining to a tile, a part of the picture hidden behind that tile was revealed.

The personality in the picture this year was quite an easy one to guess — Korean pop sensation PSY — with all teams except the team from Salem getting it right early on.

Sports, science, current affairs, history, literature — you name the subject and it was covered in the variety of question posed to the contestants and hardly any went unanswered. By about halftime, the winner was obvious with a close fight ensuing for the second and third places.

At the end of the tough battle, winners Loyola School walked away with a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. The first runner-up Jeevana School, won a cash prize of Rs. 40,000 while the second runner-up Vidya Niketan Public School walked away with Rs. 30,000. The winning teams also received other gifts apart from trophies and certificates.

“Today’s children are very smart,” said chief guest Kris Srikkanth clearly in awe.

“Studies alone not enough. Participating in extracurricular activities is always good. It is not about being good or bad, but about participating and experiencing it,” he added. Also present on stage to give away the prizes were Abhinav Kapoor, south head, Britannia and Suresh Srinivasan, vice-president, advertising, The Hindu.

The presenting sponsor was Britannia Milk Bikis Future Minds. Associate sponsors were: Indian Overseas Bank, VIT University, Firefox, Gold Winner, Black Thunder and Vizag Steel Plant.

Gift sponsors: Success Note Books, Reynolds Pens, S Mart and Roshan Bag Mall. Outdoor Gear partner: Wild Craft; Beverage partner: Real Fruit Juice; Food Court partner: Sri Krishna Sweets; Hospitality partner: Deccan Plaza; Event manager: iAds & Events
