The police on Saturday arrested six more persons of Iranian origin who used to rob valuables from elderly women in the city by diverting their attention.
According to police, there was a spate of complaints about elderly women being targeted at isolated places by men posing as policemen and being persuaded to remove their jewellery on the pretext of the area being full of anti-social elements. They would then switch the jewels and flee the scene.
A total of 31 such cases were reported in Adyar, T Nagar, Triplicane and Anna Nagar over the past many months.
Based on the identification provided by victims, the police had arrested Asif Sabeer from Thane, Maharashtra.
Based on information provided by him, the police visited Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Mettupalayam, Tirupattur, Karamadai and Pothanur in Tamil Nadu and nabbed Babar alias Babar Ali (35), Azathullah (32), Saibullah (32), Nazar (44), Sathik (27) and Abusar (20) from Mettupalayam and Karamadai areas.
During interrogation it was found that the gang was involved in 17 cases reported at Nungambakkam, Adyar and Saidapet and in cases in Madurai.
They moved around under the pretext of selling glass. The police is tracking other gang members.
