Police have arrested a man on a charge of raping an Irish woman in the city. Sujoy Mitra, 35, was an acquaintance of the woman and they celebrated her birthday at a nightclub in the Park Street area here on May 31. In the night, they went to Mitra’s residence in Kalighat where she was allegedly raped.
On a complaint by the woman on June 1, the Kalighat police arrested Mitra.
On Sunday, he was produced in a court which remanded him in police custody till June 5. Police said the victim was associated with a Darjeeling-based non-governmental organisation and had arrived in the city last week.
