Favourite Chris Froome says his build-up has been perfect

Chris Froome said on Thursday that his build-up for this year’s Tour de France had been perfect but added that nothing could have prepared him for the hype that goes with being favourite to win the biggest race in cycling.

The 28-year-old Kenya-born British rider is widely expected to succeed his fellow countryman, and Sky colleague, Bradley Wiggins as champion at the end of the race, which gets underway in Corsica on Saturday.

Like Wiggins 12 months ago, Froome comes into the Tour in fine fettle — among his successes already this season are a victory in the Criterium International in Corsica and a first place in the recent Criterium du Dauphine.

However, while feeling in great shape before the Grand Depart, Froome acknowledged that he was still not fully comfortable with his status as odds-on favourite in the eyes of most.

Sitting alongside Froome, and eager to give his team leader a rest from the limelight, Sky principal Dave Brailsford urged him to take it one step at a time in his bid for victory and sought to play down the inevitable comparisons made between this year’s favourite and last year’s winner Wiggins, who is missing here due to injury.

Alberto Contador is seen as the most likely rival for Froome in the general classification, especially with Vincenzo Nibali not taking part.

The Italian is the only man to have got the better of Froome this year, having done so in the Tirreno-Adriatico.

However, Froome himself lamented the absence of Nibali and insisted the field remains wide open.

Cavendish aiming high

Just as the Tour de France is entering into new territory, visiting Corsica for the first time in its history, so sprint king Mark Cavendish is aiming to do something he has never done before in Saturday’s opening stage.

The 28-year-old from the Isle of Man has his sights set on winning the 213-kilometre ride up Corsica's east coast from Porto-Vecchio to Bastia as he looks to pull on the legendary overall race leader’s yellow jersey for the first time.

“The yellow jersey is the only major jersey I am missing now,” Cavendish said at an Omega Pharma-Quick Step team press conference aboard the huge boat that is serving as race headquarters during its visit to Corsica.

Apart from Saturday’s opener, the sprinter-friendly stages on this Tour will be stages five, six, 10, 12, 13 and 21 — the last being on the Champs Elysees where Cavendish will aim for a fifth consecutive win.

Eetee Maheta mounted a stirring comeback to upset eighth seed Natasha Palha 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Friday.

Serving at 3-5 in the second set, Eetee found herself 15-30 down, but responded by winning the next four games to turn the tide. In the final set, the 17-year-old broke Natasha in the sixth game and converted her second match point two games later to reach her maiden final at this level.

Eetee, who resides in Patan (Gujarat) and is coached by Jignesh Rawal, had lost to the 19-year-old Natasha in their only earlier meeting. The former National junior champion worked the angles well to outplay Natasha and the latter suffered as she lacked a finishing stroke. Eetee will play favourite Ankita Raina in the final, to whom she has lost twice in as many meetings.

Second seed Ankita outplayed Shweta Rana 6-3, 6-1 in the other semifinal.

Two women gang-raped in moving car in Gurgaon

PTI Police arrest five men allegedly involved in a gang rape on Gurgaon-Faridabad road, in Gurgaon on Thursday.

Five arrested and two absconding

Two women were gang raped in a moving car in Gurgaon in the early hours of Thursday. Five persons have been arrested in this connection and two are absconding. All the accused are cab drivers.

The two women, who are in their late 20s, hired a Toyota Corolla cab from outside the Club 18 pub in Vipul Agora Mall on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road to their Tughlakabad house in Delhi around 12: 30 a.m., said the police.

After travelling some distance, the cab driver turned towards Faridabad from under the Dronacharya Metro Station and stopped the cab in an isolated place, where two men, who were waiting, got in.

“The driver drove towards Faridabad while the two men raped the two women.

“The accused then called their friends who reached in a Tata Indica car, but one of the victims managed to get away. She then made a call to the Police Control Room from the cell phone of a security guard. The other victim got down at another point and contacted the first victim,” said Gurgaon Police Commissioner Alok Mittal.

Based on the information provided by the two victims and clues gathered during the investigation, a Gurgaon Police team led by Joint Commissioner of Police Maheshwar Dayal arrested five persons from different parts of the city.

Those arrested have been identified as Devender, Pramod, Harish, Satish alias Mota and Devender Kumar. “The remaining two accused have also been identified and teams have been sent to search for them. All the seven accused are cab drivers working for different companies and know each other. Two of them are even related. All of them reside at Nathupur village in rented accommodations,” said Mr. Mittal.

The officer said according to the victims only two of the seven accused raped them. “The Tata Indica used in the crime has been seized. Four of those arrested were travelling in the Tata Indica when the incident took place. The other person was in the Toyota,” he said.

A Gurgaon Police source said that both the victims work at a bar in Gurgaon.

Two held on charge of swindling Rs. 8 crore

Palarivattom police arrested two persons on charges of duping many to the tune of Rs. 8 crore after promising huge returns for their investment through trading in the foreign currency market. Antony Devassy, 36, of Cherthala, and Jayakuttan, 38, of Kumbalam were operating Wismore Trading and Investment Consultancy at Chakkaraparambu since June 2011.

The duo promised 10 to 15 per cent interest for investments made in foreign currency trade. The arrests were made on the basis of complaints by Roy Mammen of Elamakkara, who lost Rs. 67 lakh and Vinod of Edappally, who lost Rs. 40 lakh. Preliminary investigations showed that the duo had cheated nearly 60 persons of nearly Rs. 8 crore.

Both the accused had only primary education and had the experience of handling small scale investments in share trading. They earned the confidence of investors by returning the promised money during the initial stages. Police said they have got complaints from nearly 20 people who have been cheated.

The accused used to invest in currency trading through another company named Wismore Trading FZC in the United Arab Emirates. This was done to bypass the regulations on foreign currency trading by the Reserve Bank of India and the accused had no authorisation to conduct such transactions.

However, they used to give cheques for the amount invested along with the agreement between the company and investors. The accused then converted the invested money into dollars and traded it against the euro.

The investors were lured into the scheme by convincing them of instant profits due to the difference between the dollar and the euro. The accused were remanded in judicial custody.

Record entries for Asian meet

A record number of athletes and nations will compete in the 20th Asian athletics championships to be held in Pune from July 3 to 7.

The meet, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) ,has drawn entries from 43 of the 45 member nations, the AAA announced on its website on Wednesday. A total of 580 athletes, including 220 women, would be seen in action.

India, as host country, has the maximum number of entries, with a 108-member strong contingent. The meet is being held in the country for the second time since New Delhi hosted the championships in 1989.

Sources told The Hindu that though the released entry list does not include those from Laos and Turkmenistan, the list is likely to undergo a change in the next couple of days as efforts were on to reconfirm the participation of these two countries.

“We, in fact, have entries from these countries, but it has been held back as the travel plans of the athletes from both Laos and Turkmenistan have not been received till date. Anyway, a final picture is expected to emerge by Friday.”

Belying calculations

Belying initial calculations that most of the top athletes would stay away from the meet on account of the World championships to be held in Moscow from August 10 to 18, it is now evident from the entry list that the action at the Shiv Chhattrapati stadium in Balewadi would be a classy one.

Prominent among those who figure in the list includes many of the season leaders of the continent, including Youssef A. Al-Masrahi (Saudi Arabia, 400m), Abdulrahman Musaeb Balla (Qatar, 800m), Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar, high jump), Roman Valiyev (Kazakhstan, triple jump), Chang Ming-Huang (Taipei, shot put), Vikas Gowda (India, discus throw), Dishod Nazarov (Tajikistan, hammer throw) and Dmitriy Karpov (Kazakhstan, decathlon).

Among women, the top performers of the year who have confirmed their participation in the Pune event include Wei Yungli (China, 100m and 200m), Bahrain’s Mimi Belete (1500m) and Shitaye Eshete (5000m), Sudha Singh (India, 3000m steeple chase), Hitomi Shimura (Japan, 100m hurdles), Li Ling (China, pole vault), Saeko Okayama (Japan, long jump) and Anastasiya Juravlyeva (Uzebikstan, triple jump).

The meet will be preceded by the AAA Congress on July 1.

ITF women’s tennis: Shreya knocks out top seed Minokoshi

TOPICS

tennis

Shreya Pasricha shocked top seed Mai Minokoshi of Japan with a 7-5, 7-6(5) win in the pre-quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex on Wednesday.

Trailing 2-5 in the first set, Shreya turned the tide by reeling off five games in a row. The 17-year-old, who does not have a WTA rank, fell behind 2-4 in the second set but bounced back once again to force a tie-break and won it 7-5.

In the quarterfinals, Shreya will meet Eetee Maheta who wiped out the foreign challenge by beating the seventh seed Naomi Totka of Hungary in straight sets.

“I had nothing to lose and was very consistent with my strokes. This was the biggest win of my career,” said Shreya, who is coached by Aditya Sachdeva.

Prerna hurt, retires

Fourth seed Prerna Bhambri, who had struggled with a painful shoulder in her first round match against Amrita Mukherjee, retired after three games against qualifier Ambika Pande.

Second seed Ankita Raina flirted with a possible early exit as well before subduing Rushmi Chakravarthi 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-3 in two-and-a-half hours.

It was a match Rushmi could have won had she not missed a regulation forehand at the net at 7-7 in the second set tiebreak. Once she went into the third set, Rushmi lost her grip on the match. Ankita should draw confidence from this fighting performance.

The 20-year-old that finished the match with a love hold contrasted significantly from the impatient youngster who committed many errors in the opening set.

Rushmi’s strong defence drew several errors from Ankita’s forehand as the former made the second seed play one shot too many, a few times.

From 3-2, Ankita lost seven games, slumping to 0-3 in the second set.

Rushmi’s deep returns troubled Ankita but she stormed back by attacking the latter with conviction and accuracy.

A break in the eighth game of the decider clinched it for Ankita and she served out the match in style.

The second seed will now play fifth-ranked Prarthana Thombare in the quarterfinals.

The results:

Singles (pre-quarterfinals): Shreya Pasricha bt Mai Minokoshi (Jpn) 7-5, 7-6(5); Eetee Maheta bt Naomi Totka (Hun) 6-1, 6-2; Ambika Pande bt Prerna Bhambri 3-0 retd; Natasha Palha bt Vaniya Dangwal 6-0, 6-2; Shweta Rana bt Sneha Padamata 6-4, 6-2; Rishika Sunkara bt Adnya Naik 6-0, 6-4; Prarthana Thombare bt Sai Samhitha 6-2, 6-3; Ankita Raina bt Rushmi Chakravarthi 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-3.

Doubles (quarterfinals): Naomi Totka (Hun) & Rishika Sunkara bt Amrita Mukherjee & Shreya Pasricha 6-4, 7-6 (5); Nithya Raj & Victoria Chehal bt Arantxa Andrady & Manya Nagpal 6-3, 6-4; Ankita Raina & Rushmi Chakravarthi bt Sai Samhitha & Eetee Maheta 6-3, 6-4; Natasha Palha & Prarthana Thombare bt Vaniya Dangwal & Sharon Paul 6-3, 6-2.

Heat celebrate back-to-back triumphs

The Miami Heat celebrated back-to-back NBA crowns on Monday with a victory parade that included nearly 500,000 fans.

“It’s the ultimate,” regular-season and NBA Finals MVP LeBron James told Sun Sports TV. “This is what I came down here to be able to have — a parade at the end of the year. I’m extremely blessed. It doesn’t get any better than this.”

Double-decker buses carried “King” James, his teammates, coaches, management and family through central Miami, as fans lined up to cheer after the victory in game seven of the NBA Finals over the San Antonio Spurs last Thursday for a second straight Larry O’Brien Trophy.

“It took nine months of incredible sacrifice by everybody in our organisation, grinding it out every single day,” said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who addressed the sold-out crowd inside the American Airlines Arena. “It’s incredible.”

The Heat captured a second straight NBA crown to cap a franchise-record 66 regular-season victories — including a remarkable 27-game winning streak, the second-longest such run in league history.

“It was so much hard work,” said all-star forward Chris Bosh. “It was one of the most challenging years we ever had. We came to work every day, knowing what we had to do to accomplish our goal. I can’t believe we did it.” James and fellow-superstar Dwyane Wade were the last of the players to be introduced on stage during the three-hour celebration.

“It’s a grind to be able to win a championship,” James said. “When you do it with some great teammates it doesn’t seem so bad. The main thing is championships, and that’s all that matters.”

A leader in all three of Miami’s crowns since 2006, Wade knows he and the Heat are in elite company.

“To be here celebrating my third championship, who would have thought it?” said Wade. “This one is special. I know the category it puts me in. I know how hard it was to get to this point. To now be here celebrating our third championship is phenomenal.”

After a festive summer, the Heat will be back looking to become just the third team to win three consecutive championships and the first since the Los Angeles Lakers turned the trick in 2000-02.

Fastest rape trial in Manipur

Manipur west’s District and Sessions judge Imocha Salam has convicted four rapists and one wife-murderer to life imprisonment in two separate judgements. Three of the convicts happen to be security personnel.

The 8-month trial, which saw the judge sentencing the rapists on Tuesday, was the fastest rape trial in Manipur. It was also for the first time in Manipur’s legal history that rapists were sentenced to life imprisonment, although the victim was not killed. The prosecution’s case stated the 42-year-old tribal woman had hitched a ride in the truck driven by her brother-in-law from Tamenglong district to Imphal on the night of March 21 The accused were joy-riding in a car and were allegedly under the influence of liquor. They intercepted the truck, beat up the driver and gang-raped the woman. Hearing her screams, villagers overpowered the accused.

Sketch of Manipal gang-rape suspect released

Special Arrangement The sketch of one of the accused in Manipal gang-rape case.

The police released the sketch of one of the suspects in the abduction and gang-rape of a medical student of Manipal University here on Monday.

The student, hailing from Kerala, was abducted around 11.15 p.m. on June 20, near the MCOPS building, by three persons in an autorickshaw and later gang-raped. The student, who fractured her leg, is recuperating at Kasturba Hospital in Manipal.

Releasing the sketch at a press conference here, Pratap Reddy, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range), said it had been drawn by experts in the department on the basis of the description given by the student.

The accused was of medium height, thin build, dark in colour with curly hair, and sported a French beard. The sketch was being released so that the accused could be identified with the help of the public.

Those with any information about the accused could call Sadananda Tippannanavar, police inspector, Manipal police station, on 9480805448, or the Udupi Special Cell on 9742512100 or 0820-2521257, or email spudp@ksp.gov.in.

The identity of the caller would be kept confidential.

The sketch had been given to police teams, autorickshaw drivers, and citizen volunteers.

11 teams

Nearly 200 police personnel from the Western Range, divided into 11 teams, were working on the case. The police had got CCTV footage from some individuals, besides that of the university. The footage of the autorickshaw used for the abduction was also there. The police had also shared the footage with some autorickshaw drivers. “We are working on enhancing the visual quality of the footage. We have some clues on the number of the autorickshaw,” Mr. Reddy added.

“We have leads on the autorickshaw and the suspects, which we are following. We have questioned 17 persons so far,” he said.

Mr. Reddy said the police were interacting with the medical student only through doctors. It was a slow process of getting information from her. The police would get the medical report on Tuesday evening. The police had registered the case as “sexual assault by a gang”.

‘Condition stable’

Mr. Reddy said the victim’s condition was now stable and she was being counselled.

Important decisions taken at AICF meeting

TOPICS

Grandmasters with 2500 Elo rating in Open and Woman Grandmasters with 2200 Elo rating in women’s category need not participate in the National Premier / National challenger events in the immediate previous year anymore to take part in the Asian individual championship. Only, such ratings should reflect in the FIDE ratings list published two months before the start of the tournament.

A decision to this effect was taken at the All India Chess Federation annual general body meeting held here on Sunday. It was also decided that GMs and women GMs can participate as ‘special entry’ in world junior championship even if they had not participated in the National junior / National junior girls championships in the previous year.

Yet another new development is in the procedure for selecting the Indian men and women’s teams for World championships / Olympiad / Asian team championship. From now on, the national champion and the top four rated players (as per ratings published two months before the event) will get a direct entry. Also, while computing the rating, 75 Elo points will be added to all those who participated in the premier / challenger National championships in the previous year, according to a press release.

It was announced that former National ‘A’ player V. Hariharan, currently Joint Secretary has been made Secretary in place of Bharat Singh in keeping with government guidelines. Hariharan is also the General Secretary, TNSCA.

Kishore Bandeker has taken over as Joint Secretary while Mr. Singh has been appointed Chief Executive Officer.

The general body took a serious view of the complaints against Delhi player D.K. Chopra about misbehaviour with women players and children during tournaments in the last four years and decided to slap a life ban on him.

With the World championship match between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen scheduled here in November, the AICF, with President J.C.D. Prabhakar in the chair, took the occasion to thank the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister for coming forward to fund the championship.

Also, it was decided to organise many tournaments during the world championship to lend a carnival atmosphere to the settings in the city.

Jaffer Ashique Ali replaces Chandramouli

TOPICS

sport

cricket

Jaffer Ashique Ali has replaced S. Chandramouli as a member from the districts in the State senior selection committee. The decision was made at the season’s first Executive Committee meeting of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) here on Monday.

A right-handed batsman, Jaffer played three Ranji Trophy matches in the mid-90s scoring 77 runs at 19.25. Despite limited opportunities for the State, he made a name for himself as a punishing batsman in the TNCA first division league and in the City versus Districts matches.

The other three members of the panel will retain their posts. B. Kalyanasundaram will continue as chairman and he will once again be accompanied by S. Suresh and S. Madhavan.

There were talks of sweeping changes in the selection committee after Tamil Nadu’s disappointing display last season, particularly in the Ranji Trophy where the fancied side did not qualify for the quarterfinals. And the names of some prominent former players such as S. Sharath were doing the rounds.

The TNCA, however, retained its faith in a majority of the committee. There was a belief that Tamil Nadu’s below par displays had less to do with selection and more to do with the on-field performances from several established players.

Pre-season camp

There are indications that the selectors, with quick announcements of the coach, the captain and the vice-captain, would want to hold a prolonged pre-season camp in September — after the first set of TNCA first division matches and the Buchi Babu competition — when the chances of heavy rain disrupting the proceedings are less. This could be followed by a shorter camp in October before the Ranji Trophy begins in November.

Presently, there is only one pre-season camp in October when the threat from inclement weather looms — it was badly affected by rain last season. Then, some of the promising young cricketers are busy with the BCCI junior tournaments during this month. Another camp, conducted earlier, would also help in the bonding between the players.

The TNCA is expected to zero in on the State coach in the first week of July. This will be a big move ahead of a keenly awaited season.

Disaster helplines flooded

Over 2,500 calls received in three days from India and abroad

More than 2,500 calls, including several from outside India, have been received at the makeshift Uttarakhand Disaster Control Centre at the Uttarakhand Niwas here during the past three days, with anxious relatives of the stranded pilgrims desperately seeking the whereabouts of their loved ones.

The control centre has a landline number, 011-23010158, and two mobile numbers, 9990831003 and 9718972333, of the Information Department officials. “Although several helpline numbers have been announced to provide information about the rescued pilgrims and other information about the rescue operation, we have received several complaints about phone calls not being attended to at these helplines. Ours is the only control centre where we make sure that all the phone calls are attended to and queries of the worried callers are satisfactorily replied. I sleep with my mobile phone switched on to ensure that no call goes unanswered, even at night,” said Senior Assistant Information Officer Chetan Pandey, who is almost single-handedly manning the control centre at the Niwas.

“Most of those calling at the centre say they had last spoken to their relatives on June 15 or June 16 and there has been no communication since then. We have sent 30 satellite phones through the rescue teams to the pilgrims stranded at different points to allow them to communicate with their relatives. The callers are told that details of the rescued pilgrims are being regularly updated at the Uttarakhand Government website www.uk.gov.in., and on visiting the website they can find whether their family members have been rescued so far or not,” Mr. Pandey said.

The official said there are also instances of worried relatives making repeated calls, desperately seeking the whereabouts of their family members. “Often the callers break into tears and become inconsolable while making the calls. Many of them have been calling repeatedly to learn about the well-being of their near and dear ones. I have been receiving calls from a man in Oman seeking information about his family members, but we are helpless in giving any information beyond the website addresses, helpline numbers and the update on the rescue operation. We have also received over half-a-dozen calls from New York and some foreign embassies,” said Mr. Pandey.

The Uttarakhand Government has also pressed into service all the registered cabs in Dehra Dun to ferry stranded pilgrims and also four to five coaches have been reserved in trains to provide free journey to the rescued pilgrims, he added.

It was a lights to flag victory for pole sitter Yudai Jinkawa of Japan in the second race of the MRF F1600 class, the premier event of the MMSC-FMSCI National racing championship, at the Kari Motor Speedway in Chettipalayam here on Sunday.

Jinkawa made the best use of the reverse grid start to gain a slight edge. So did crowd favourites and championship leader Ashwin Sundar (Chennai) and race one winner Kizuku Hirota (Japan).

The former moved quickly from the back of the grid to the fourth position in the first corner. But even before he could further dent the morale of the front runners the red flags came out as the latter had spun viciously and out of the contest.

Ashwin had to start from the back of the grid again as the race had lasted for only a lap. Jinkawa cashed in on the chance and controlled the gap well to take the chequered flag much to the joy of his country mates.

Indians on the podium

Sudarsan Rao and a fighting Ashwin took the next two places respectively.

“I am happy to have won the race here. I knew I had the speed. It is nice that I converted it into a fine win,” said Jinkawa, the multiple race winner, who will not however enjoy the championship points being an international driver.

In the Indian Touring Cars category, N. Leelakrishnan of Big Foots Racing (Bangalore) and Arjun Balu of Tiger Sports India (Coimbatore) shared a race win each. Both the races were closely fought and the duo stood the test well to come up trumps. S. Narendran of Wallace Sports proved his class in the Formula LGB4, winning both races with relative ease.

The results: MRF F1600: Race 2: 1. Yudai Jinkawa (Japan) 16:17.175; 2. Sudarsan Rao (India); 3. Ashwin Sundar (India).

‘Young patrons of The Hindu In School will have many surprises’

The Hindu Teachers and principals of various schools participating in a meeting organised by The Hindu at Haailand to brief them on new educational tool The Hindu In School at Chinna Kakani in Guntur district on Saturday. Photo: T. Vijaya Kumar

Education is more than just learning numbers and letters, say principals at interactive session

Principals of schools unanimously agreed that education is more than just learning numbers and letters; and that this important phase in a child’s life is to experience art and imagination.

Schools in central coastal Andhra are willing to take this concept and put it into practice by subscribing to The Hindu In School, an eight-page ‘powerful educational tool’ designed exclusively for students.

At the annual meeting of the principals, hosted by The Hindu at Haailand Resorts on Saturday, it was heartening to see educators understanding the need for allowing the students’ minds to be engaged with different forms of learning through varied platforms.

Stories are re-worked by the editorial team members to cater to the standards of the student community reading The Hindu In School, The Hindu Regional General Manager (Business Development) D. Rajkumar told the principals. Mr. Rajkumar also spoke at length about the interesting and exciting blend of columns.

The columns include ‘Response to Editorial’ where a student could address his/her response to the editorial published every week. If The Wow Column, Know Your English, Childspeak and The World in Limerick are aimed at capturing students’ imagination, ‘Teachers’ Corner’ is a space reserved for teachers, educationists and academicians to engage with students.

The Hindu In School was in the process of evolving and very soon it would spring up pleasant surprises to its young patrons by unfolding multiple features to further spice up their reading experience, said The Hindu Sr. General Manager (Circulation) A. Sridhar.

The interactive session that followed saw queries tossed and suggestions made by participants who wanted The Hindu team members to visit their respective schools at regular intervals to motivate students.

The need to stimulate teachers to inculcate among students the habit of reading newspaper was stressed by many.

Referring to an oft-repeated ‘concern’ for students from rural backdrop, Mr. Sridhar sought to remind that every child was born with the same level of intelligence.

“It is the environment that depresses or encourages a kid. It is for us to create a conducive atmosphere for a child to pave the way for his all-round growth,” he said.

Youngsters clean tank

An initiative by a group of volunteers to help improve the groundwater recharge at Villivakkam

The temple tank at Somya Damodara Perumal Temple in Villivakkam is now drawing a lot of attention. For the wrong reasons. It is bone dry and in a state of utter neglect.

A group of young boys have taken it upon themselves to restore and recharge the temple tank. They work on it during the weekends.

This initiative is led by D. Bhasker Babu, an employee of Integral Coach Factory, to help restore the beauty of this ancient temple.

“I was raised up in Villivakkam and this temple is an integral part of us. Once upon a time, the tank never dried up. Now, by January itself, it goes dry and children play cricket there,” says Babu, who also runs a non-governmental organisation Nalmanam. About 26 student volunteers of Nalmanam are helping Babu clear up the tank of its litter. “We do not have the money to donate, but we can do our bit in the form of physical work,” says Mr. Babu.

The plan is to complete the work in two months so that when monsoon sets in, the tank will be ready to collect water. Cleaning the tank and filling it with water will help groundwater replenishment in the area.

Even the temple authorities agree that only such initiatives by devotees can bring back the pristine ambience of the place. “The 20 ft tank used to hold 18 ft water but that’s all gone. For the last three years no Teppotsavam (float festival) was conducted,” says R. Ravishankar, clerk at the temple.

Besant Nagar skating rink loses sheen

The Hindu Bad ground in Children Skating at Besant Nagar.

All is not well for roller skaters at the rink in Elliots Beach, Besant Nagar. The floor has cracked at many places, making it difficult to slide. Poor lighting makes it worse.

“On the eastern side, the flooring is heavily cracked. As a result, students can't use that portion.

On this rink, it is difficult to do speed-skating,” says S. Senthilnathan, a parent who accompanies his daughter to the rink.

Many other parents say that sliding on such a surface exhausts one more quickly. Plus, there is also the concern about shoes wearing out easily.

The rink was opened by the Chennai Corporation in the mid-1990s and classes were started a few years later.

It draws people from different areas of the city because of its wide track (the inner radial of the rink measures up to 90 metres).

About 50 children on an average practice at the rink on a daily basis.

The number goes up considerably during the weekends and summer vacations.

Regular skaters say if rink is not maintained properly, the possibility of new skaters coming in will get slimmer.

“I cannot remember the last time when the floor was polished.

At least once in five years, the rink needs maintenance, most importantly polishing of the floor,” says S. Nandhalal, one of the main coaches who has been taking classes for over a decade.

Earlier the rink was fenced with iron grills, but sea breeze damaged it leaving it with no cover.

There are other corporation-maintained rinks, including the ones at Anna Nagar, Marina Beach and Natesan Park in KK Nagar.

Usain Bolt wins 100 finals at Jamaica nationals

AP Jamaica's sprinter Usain Bolt tries the starting block while warming up before running the qualification heat of the men's 100m dash of the Jamaica Senior National Trials in Kingston, Jamaica on Thursday.

Usain Bolt is revving up for the world championships in August, but he says he has a lot or work on before the Moscow meet.

The world’s fastest man clocked a 9.94 seconds in the 100 meters to win the finals of the Jamaica national championships on Friday night. But he sounded less than thrilled with his performance.

“It’s all about getting through and getting it done and that’s what I did,” Bolt told reporters after the race in the island’s national stadium, which was half empty on a calm Friday night in Kingston.

“I’ve got a lot more work to do,” the 100 and 200 world record-holder said after the race, adding, “As long as the coach is not worried, I’m not worried.”

Behind Bolt was Kemar Bailey-Cole at 9.98 and Nickel Ashmeade at 9.99. Former world record holder Asafa Powell did not finish in the top three to qualify for the worlds, shocking some of the decorated sprint star’s many fans in Jamaica.

At Friday’s 100 meter finals, Bolt’s night was certainly made easier by the absence of teammate Yohan Blake. The Olympic silver medallist withdrew from the meet because of a hamstring injury that his agent says hasn’t completely healed. But since Blake won the 100 meters at the 2011 worlds he has automatic qualification for the race at the August competition in Moscow.

Bolt has dominated global sprinting for years. The powerful Jamaican has set world records (his mark stands at 9.58) and captured two straight Olympic 100-meter finals.

But earlier this month at the Golden Gala meet in Rome, Bolt lost by a hundredth of a second to American Justin Gatlin in the 100. It was Bolt’s first significant loss since his false-start disqualification at the 2011 world championships in South Korean.

At the U.S. championships in Iowa on Friday night, American sprinter Tyson Gay overcame a slow start to win the 100 meters, surging past Gatlin halfway through the race. Gay finished in a time of 9.75 seconds, the fastest in the world this season.

At Jamaica’s meet on Friday, Kerron Stewart won the women’s 100 meters. She ran 10.94 seconds, beating Sherone Simpson and Schillonie Calvert. Two-time Olympic champion Shelley-Anne Fraser-Pryce qualified for the worlds after dominating the Diamond League.

Decorated female sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown is also missing Jamaica’s national championships due to a positive drug test being investigated by an island anti-doping panel.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Campbell-Brown, or “VCB,” as she known in sprinting circles, tested positive for a banned substance at a meet in May and will serve a suspension while anti-doping officials rules on the positive drug test.

Earlier this week, Campbell-Brown’s manager, Claude Bryan, said the accusation came as a “shock to her” and the reigning 200-meter world champ is determined to clear her name.

Just before Friday’s meet got under way, Warren Blake, president of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association, urged people not to rush to judgment, saying everyone should wait for the official ruling from the disciplinary panel.

A day after Jamaican officials announced Campbell-Brown’s provisional suspension, a spokesman for the International Association of Athletics Federations told AP that “all evidence seems to point to this offense being a lesser one.”

The bathing beauty

Esther Williams on location for the film, 'Pagan Love Song.' Photo: AP

Esther Williams, Hollywood’s mermaid, passed away recently at 91. The films she made offered water ballet and spectacular aquatic thrills.

Can a Hollywood cinema fan imagine a John Wayne Western film without horses and guns? A Bob Hope movie without wisecracks ? Or an Esther Williams extravaganza without a swimming pool?

Esther Williams, Hollywood’s water baby, died in her sleep at her California home recently. She was 91. She enabled Hollywood discover the beauty and spectacle of technicolor, water ballet and aquatic thrills in around 30 movies. Her films raked in so much cash that she was ranked 24th in 1947, 8th in 1949 and 1950 on the box office list.

One of her movies was called ‘The Million Dollar Mermaid’ and no one could challenge it. Sometime in the early 1950s, I watched the ‘Bathing Beauty’, starring Williams and Red Skeleton. The glorious water ballet scenes, the fountains and the acrobatics by the trim swimmers are still fresh in my memory. The film had a long run in the Metro chain of theatres in India.

Esther’s father was a Los Angeles sign painter and mother, a psychologist. Esther, who was the fifth and last child, excelled in swimming even before she could walk properly. A swimming champion at 5, she broke national records excelling in diving, dancing and aquacade shows. At L.A. City College, she ventured into part-time modelling and was in the powerful U.S. swimming team for the 1940 Olympic Games at L.A., but then World War II intervened.

Water vs ice

MGM was on the lookout for a rival to Sonja Henie’s ice figure skating scenes in 20th Century Fox movies and Williams was a godsend. Ice baby vs Water baby! She was offered a contract in 1941.

Since swimming was a national American pastime, Williams’ movie roles, though small were well publicised. She replaced top star Lana Turner, who was getting married to musician Artie Shaw, in a movie with Clark Gable as the leading man. It could have been a great break for Williams, but as luck would have it, she had to quit the role in three months, because Lana Turner was back after a quick divorce!

MGM paired Williams with many of the studio heroes, Howard Keel, Ricardo Montalban, Gene Kelley, Ben Gage, Van Johnson and others. ‘Dangerous when Wet,’ ‘Pagan Love Song’ ‘Jupiter’s Darling,’ ‘Million Dollar Mermaid’ and of course, ‘Bathing Beauty’ were all big budget films and fared well at the box office. Williams did attempt occasional films with straightforward themes but these invariably failed. She quit MGM following a contract dispute but continued to do films for Universal International and also freelanced. Never one to sign films in a bulk, Williams told Hollywood press, she was quite satisfied with around 30 films when she retired in 1960.

In phase two of her career she was quite busy, designing swim wear and getting involved in women’s issues and doing TV serials. Her personal life was often turbulent. Among her four husbands, two were actors Ben Gage and Fernando Lamas and the Hollywood media freely discussed her affairs with Victor Mature and Jeff Chandler, both macho heroes.

Her memoirs was called ‘Million Dollar Mermaid’ and for that era, it was quite outspoken. One of her sons commented, “She was the best swim teacher and soul Mom,’’ - a sentiment which would have made the mother happy.

“Gobble You Up!” is a coming together of images, text and orality with fascinating results

Back in school, while studying Seamus Heaney’s poems, we came across one called ‘Cow in Calf’. Heaney describes, with great immediacy, a pregnant cow as he ponders her plumpness (“I had to/ hit again and again and/ heard the blows plump like a depth charge/ far in her gut”). Except, before we started reading the poem, a few of us took the title too literally. “How can a cow be inside a calf?” someone asked, not anticipating the years of ridicule that lay ahead.

I was reminded of this episode while reading Gobble You Up! a new book by Chennai-based independent publishing house Tara Books. It is based on a Rajasthani trickster tale, where a wily jackal, too lazy to hunt for food, dupes his friend the crane, proceeding to gobble up every animal he comes across — a tortoise, a squirrel, a peacock, an elephant even — until his belly can hold no more.

The minimalist offering is an example of the successful coming together of the usual antagonists – images, text and orality. The tale has been illustrated by Sunita, an artist originally from Datasaooti village in Rajasthan, who remembered it from her grandfather’s narrations.

It was then written down by her husband Prabhat, and Susheela Varadarajan translated it into English. From the basic plot of the original tale, Gita Wolf of Tara Books wrote the text with cumulative rhyme, where the plot progresses through the repetition of key verses (such as “Twelve fish in my tum/ sorry crane just too dumb”).

The spare plot of the tale is complemented by intricate illustrations. The art is an example of Mandna, an ancient art form practised, and kept alive inter-generationally, only by women. “In the village, on floors and walls we used to draw these images. You can draw anything you want – birds, tigers, elephants, horses. Nowadays, on pukka walls we have to use colour, but traditionally, on kuchha walls we use khadiya and geru,” says Sunita. She was put in touch with Gita Wolf by an acquaintance named Madan from Kota, Rajasthan, who holds a Ph.D in Mandna.

“There are no brushes – a piece of cloth soaked in chalk and lime paste is squeezed through the artist’s fingers in a fluid line. The art is ephemeral and renewed regularly, during festivals and celebrations. Apart from ritual motifs, one of the favourite themes of Meena artist is animals and their young; village walls teem with portraits of all kinds of beasts, domestic and young,” the book informs.

One of the challenges in illustrating the story was to keep the quality of wall art, while transferring it to a different surface. For the purpose of this handmade book, brown paper has been used with white acrylic paint squeezed through the artist’s fingers. Thereafter, book designer Rathna Ramanathan split the images into two colours — the jackal is rendered in black, while all the creatures he swallows are in white.

Sunita has also contributed illustrations to the magazine Champak, and is planning to hold an exhibition of her art in Jaipur, a rarity among Meena women whose art is rarely seen away from their villages.
