Calicut University honours former sportspersons





The University of Calicut honoured former sportspersons and sports reporters of newspapers at a sports convocation held on the campus on Monday.


Inaugurating the function, Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed said he would try to get Central funds for the development of the university in sports.


Delivering the convocation address, Vice-Chancellor M. Abdul Salam said ‘Health for all through sports and games’ was the motto of the university. He said that sporting facilities available in developed countries would be made available at the university. He reiterated the university’s plans to construct a green complex.


Dr. Salam said a sports awareness day would be observed this year.


Former sportspersons E.J. Jacob, S.S. Kaimal, C.P.M. Usman Koya, K.N.K. Nair, S. Muraleedharan, Victor Manhila, and Hassan Koya were felicitated at the function.


Cash awards, scholarships, and sports kits were distributed to those who excelled in national sports meets.


Mr. Ahamed unveiled the photographs of eight Olympians who were former students of the university. They were K.T. Irfan, Tintu Luka, Diju V., Lijo David Thottan, V. Ramachandran, Jincy Philip, Manjima Kuriakose, and Bobby Aloysius.


Pro Vice-Chancellor K. Ravindranath presided. Syndicate members T.V. Ibrahim, A. Abdurahman, Zainul Abid Kotta, and T.P. Ahamed attended. Physical Education Director Zakir Husain presented a report. Registrar M.V. Joseph welcomed the gathering.
