Power cuts

The spectre of long-duration power cuts has returned to haunt Tamil Nadu, except Chennai. Load-shedding of 12-14 hours is unprecedented any time and anywhere in India. When people, particularly students, suffer without electricity during nights, why should power-intensive heavy industries be allowed three-shift operations? The government should ban night-shift operations till power generation improves.

Besides, it is discriminatory that Chennai escapes with just a two-hour power cut. Night power cuts can be offset if corrective measures are taken. Buying surplus power from neighbouring States can also be explored. Come summer, districts will be in for a long haul if poverty is not shared.
