The Engineering Expo, which is presently held at eight locations to showcase the strength of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), will be extended to three more tier-II cities soon to give it a pan-India status, said Network 18 Publishing, CEO, Sandeep Khosla on Thursday.

Started in 2002 by Network 18 Publishing, the expo serves as a platform for SMEs to display their products as well as some of the latest technologies that could help develop their business. Last year, the show generated business enquiries of around Rs.600 crore during 2011 and it was bound to touch the Rs.1,000 crore mark very soon.

Briefing reporters at the fifth edition of Engineering Expo, Chennai, he said the expo is a preferred destination for SMEs as well as for manufacturing and engineering organisations to further their growth. During the current year, we will hold expo in Hyderabad and Ludhiana and are exploring cities such as Coimbatore, Kolkata, Kolhapur and Surat. The next step is to hold the expo in South East Asian countries.

“We have deliberately avoided metros because of cost factor and some of the tier-II cities have not been considered due to lack of infrastructure facilities. Moreover, SMEs are located in tier-II cities. Taking the expo to popular cities is a costlier exercise. Finally, the cost will be passed on to the customers,” he said.

P. Shanmugasundaram, Chief General Manager, TIDCO (Projects) inaugurated the four-day fair at the Chennai Trade Centre in which over 200 exhibitors are taking part. The exhibition is spread over 4,000 square metres displaying about 6,000 to 8,000 products.

Network 18 Publishing, Senior Editor, Manas Bastia said they were expecting the Business-to-Business meet at Chennai to generate enquiries of Rs.48 crore against Rs.41.98 crore registered for last year.

FEIN Power Tools India announced the launch of hand-guided core drilling system for metal. The company CEO Ameer Munaff said it was a perfect avenue to do so as it provided an opportunity for them to demonstrate their product to a large audience in a cost-effective manner.
