Kyra moves up





Top-seeded Kyra Shroff of India overcame a shaky start to beat compatriot Riya Bhatia 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of the NBCC ITF women’s $10,000 tournament at the BTA Complex here on Monday.


Kyra struggled with her serve and returns against Riya and trailed 1-5 in the first set. But the top seed made a spectacular turnaround and won six consecutive games to wrap up the first set 7-5. Continuing with the momentum, Kyra took a 5-0 lead in the second set, which she eventually won 6-2.


The other seeds, including second-seeded Rutuja Bhosale and fourth-seeded Ankita Raina won their matches easily.


In another match wildcard Amrita Mukherjee made short work of qualifier Natasha Kanvinde of Great Britain 6-1, 6-0. He-Chun-Yan of China beat Indian challenger Sneha Padamata 6-0, 6-3.
