Names of 11 lakh voters removed

Woman voters outnumber men in poll roll

As many as 11 lakh names of voters in the State have been removed from the roll, with the publication of final roll on Thursday.

This is an outcome of a household survey undertaken by the poll authorities as part of the summary revision of the roll during October-December last year. As usual, the reasons of death and migration of voters within or outside the State, also hold good this time too.

For the purpose of deleting duplicate entries of voters in the State, the authorities referred to original constituencies the data of such voters who had migrated within the State and furnished information regarding their electors’ photo identity card numbers. This was an improvement over the practice of the past, according to Praveen Kumar, Chief Electoral Officer.

At the end of the process, names of 5.53 lakh men and 5.46 women were deleted. In respect of transgender, 48 persons were taken off.

It is in Tiruvallur district that a maximum number of deletion had taken place. A little over 99,000 names had been removed from the roll. Chennai came next with 83,510 and Vellore – 79,590.

As part of the revision, the details of around 22 lakh electors had been included. Women outnumbered men with the admission of about 11.43 lakh applications. In the case of men, the figure of addition was 10.63 lakhs. Three hundred and forty three applications of transgender had been accepted.

Kancheepuram accounted for the maximum number of inclusion of names with 1.54 lakh followed by Chennai – 1.46 lakh and Vellore – 1.42 lakh.

The net increase of electors had been witnessed in Kancheepuram with around 1.28 lakh. Tirunelveli came second with a net addition of 99,593 electors and Coimbatore – 98,611.

At the time of publication of the draft electoral roll in October last, the State had about 5.04 crore electors.

According to a release issued by the CEO, the total number of electors to total population ratio in Tamil Nadu, as per the final roll, is 69.22 per cent, which was is in line with the census ratio of 18+ population to total population. The gender ratio of electors in the roll is 994 as against the census population gender ratio of 995.

The Elector Photo Identity Cards for those whose names have been included would be given at functions to be held on the occasion of National Voters Day on January 25 at the respective polling stations. People can ascertain whether their names have been included in the electoral roll at the nearest zonal office in corporation areas or taluk offices elsewhere.

The roll will also be hosted on the website of the State Elections Department (http://elections.tn.gov.in)

Mobile numbers

An added feature of the revision this time was that the field-level officials collected mobile numbers of electors. The data on the mobile numbers were being uploaded, the CEO said, adding that only on completion of the exercise, he would be able to say how many electors had given their mobile numbers.
