Says water in reservoirs will suffice to generate power for 3 more days only
Minister for Electricity Aryadan Mohammed has said that the State was reeling under severe power crisis and the water remaining in the reservoirs for power generation will last for three more days only.
The Minister was speaking after inaugurating the Peechi Small hydel project on Monday.
“The average power consumption in the State has been estimated as 56 million units. But the State’s current production is only 10 million units.
“The Kerala State Electricity Board has been incurring a huge annual loss of Rs.2,400 crore for sourcing power from various agents,” the Minister said.
He said the State had to improve its power generation at any cost.
“People should cooperate with power projects, which can be constructed with minimum damage to the environment. People’s protest has been creating hurdles for every attempt of the government to augment power production,” he said.
Conservation of energy was the most cost effective solution to energy shortage, he said.
“Energy saved is energy produced. Saving of energy is the need of the hour as the demand has gone up steeply while the generation remained limited,” he said. The government had started steps to install solar panel in 10,000 houses, the Minister said.
Work on the Peechi Small hydel project, which started in November, 2010, was completed in November 2012.
