There is too much emphasis on knowledge acquisition, which could be substituted with rational thinking, said Nobel laureate Ei-ichi Negishi here on Friday.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the lecture that was organised by The Bangalore Science Forum and said that rational thinking would facilitate new ideas which could lead to discoveries.
He said he was extremely positive about the future of scientific research in India. “There is tremendous scope for India in the field of scientific research as the country has several top notch scientists, which are assets to the country,” he said.
Mr. Negishi was addressing a packed audience on the topic ‘Magical Power of Transition Metals’ and said for researchers who worked in the field of chemistry, the Periodic Table was the “universe”. “We can spin several things out of the periodic table,” he added.
He also urged the youth to participate in competitions in the field of science and excel in it. When asked how much time he spends at the laboratory or the office, he said, “I spend very little time in the laboratory, but I still end up contributing about 50 per cent of work done by the team.”
When a father of a student asked him how his daughter could memorise the Periodic Table easily, he said, “You need to live with it. You know the name of your daughter and wife. Similarly, live with it to remember it.”
Aditya Nagaraj, a student of BMS College of Engineering, who was thrilled by the experience, said, “He conveyed several complicated things in a simple manner. It was extremely inspiring and a great opportunity to hear a Nobel laureate’s speech.”
