I read with concern Anand Haridas’ article on Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit--its past, present and future. He finds that the objective of the university is riddled with contradictions. In the light of these I would like to make the following observations.
A university, as the name indicates, promotes universalism and hence the nomenclature Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit is restrictive.
The university could well have an Institute of Sanskrit Studies, but that shoudn’t prevent the university from introducing other courses relevant to the practical aspects of living so long as it is aimed at the acquisition of knowledge leading to the wisdom needed for self-realization.
While the university upholds its ideals, it should attract students from all walks of life seeking opportunities for their professional advancement and the training needed for responsible citizenship. So it is time the university thought about bringing in the necessary changes so that the slow death of an institution established in the name of one of the greatest sons of India is averted.

We are thankful to the Mayor, Division Councilor and The Hindu for the action taken to clean the drain along the south side of Subhash Chandra Bose Road. The main reason for clogging is the collection and accumulation of waste near and over the drain and the subsequent burning of plastic waste materials, which are still continuing. Sometimes septic tank wastes are also dumped here. We once again request the authorities to help us to rid the area of this menace.
