Five of family among seven killed in two accidents on Bangalore-Mysore highway

MANGLED: The multi-utility vehicle that rammed a tree killing five in Mandya on Wednesday.

Seven persons were killed and nine injured in two major accidents on the busy Bangalore-Mysore highway early on Wednesday.

While five persons of a family from Kerala died when their multi-utility vehicle rammed a tree, two persons from Maddur died when a container vehicle collided with a goods carrier in which they were travelling.

The first accident took place near the municipal college in Mandya at 1.15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Ayesha (62); her son, Abbas (44); his wife, Baby Sharija (35) and their son Jabbar (18); and Ayesha’s other son, Jaffer (25) died in the accident. Jaffer’s wife, Asifa (18), their son Aman (4), daughter Naina (5) and their relative Akhil (6) suffered severe injuries.

The injured were rushed to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore and BGS Apollo Hospital in Mysore after being treated at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital here, police sources said.

The victims were residents of Edakkara village in Nilambur taluk of Malappuram district in Kerala, sources added.

The police, based on statements of those who had been injured, said that the family was on its way to Bangalore to see a plot of land that Ayesha’s family had recently purchased there.

“The vehicle was speeding when it mounted the pavement before ramming the tree,” an officer at the Mandya city traffic police station said.

Ayesha’s sons were in the automobile business in Saudi Arabia and had recently relocated to their native place, the officer said.

Head-on collision

Santosh (20) and Rajesh (28) were killed and Siddesh, Anil, Nandish, Madhu and Nagaraj — all residents of Maddur — sustained severe injuries when a container vehicle rammed into the goods carrier in which they were travelling.

The accident took place near Chikkegowdana Doddi on the Bangalore-Mysore highway at 5 a.m.

The speeding container vehicle jumped the median and hit the goods carrier that was transporting tender coconuts to Maddur from K.R. Pet.

“We have registered a case against the container vehicle driver Rassul,” an officer at the Mandya Rural police station said.

The injured were admitted to various hospitals in Mandya.

The bodies of all seven accident victims were handed over to their relatives after the post-mortems were conducted here.
