Striking doctors say protest will continue till their demands are met
Medicare services at Gandhi Hospital were hit on Wednesday as junior doctors boycotted emergency and inpatient services. The flash strike call given by medicos, after they were attacked by an angry crowd on Tuesday, also had an impact on outpatient facilities at the hospital.
Surgeries postponed
Close to 100 elective surgeries such as family planning, appendicitis, surgeries in the dental department were postponed and patients were sent back on Wednesday. Almost all medical services in the inpatient department too were affected severely, as the medicos boycotted their duties in the inpatient departments of the hospital.
“They stopped giving tokens in the outpatient department after it crossed the 500 mark. I had to take my son to a private clinic because of the strike,” said Ashok, whose son had viral fever.
Gandhi Hospital Superintendent S. Mehboob claimed that all emergency cases were attended to.
He further said that senior doctors and in-service post graduate doctors were roped in the place of the striking junior doctors.
“But if the strike is continued for three more days, it will be difficult for us,” said Mr. Mehboob.
Meanwhile, the junior doctors announced that they would continue their strike until their demands were met.
