Onam potpourri on screen

  • The Hindu Fahadh Faasil in Friday

  • The Hindu Mammootty and Charmi in Thappana

  • The Hindu Mohanlal and Amala Paul in Run Baby Run

  • The Hindu Dileep, Harisree Ashokan and Sanusha in Mr. Marumakan

For Malayali viewers, the battle of the big releases on the silver screen has always been part of Onam celebrations. Every year big names in the business come up with mega projects to woo film viewers during the festive season, as good initial turnovers are almost guaranteed. This year Mammootty, Mohanlal, Dileep and Fahadh Faasil lead the four films in the running for the Onam box office bonanza. Here’s a look at each of the movies.

THAPPANA

Cast: Mammootty, Charmi, Murali Gopy

According to director Johny Antony, Thappana is a “clean family entertainer”. It’s the tale of Samson (Mammootty) and Mallika (Charmi) who are released from jail on the same day. Circumstances force Samson to accompany Mallika on her way back home to a village called Karippa. But it turns out to be an eventful, intriguing trip. “The film has a serious storyline but it has been narrated with a touch of humour,” says Johny. The director seems to be trying to get his act together after the dismal show of his last film, Masters, which was released earlier this year. This is the third time that the director is working with Mammootty after the comedies Thuruppu Gulan and Ee Pattanathil Bhootham.

“My concept of a hero is a jovial person and maybe because I am a Mammootty fan, I like to watch him playing characters with a tinge of humour, which is one of the USPs of this film,” says Johny. Thappana is being produced by Milan Jaleel under the banner of Galaxy Films.

MR. MARUMAKAN

Cast: Dileep, Sanusha, Bhagyaraj, Khushboo

Dileep lived up to his popularity with the hit Mayamohini earlier this year. Now the genial actor is back with another laugh riot, having once again teamed up with scenarist duo Siby K. Thomas and Udayakrishna. Sandhya Mohan has directed the film. In the film, Ashok Chakravarthy (Dileep) is a lawyer, who falls for the arrogant and snooty Raja Lakshmi (Sanusha). Raja Lakshmi’s mother, Raja Mallika (Khushboo), and grandmother, Raja Kokila (Sheela), are similar personalities. Caught among the domineering females is amiable Balasubramaniam (Bhagyaraj), who is Raja Lakshmi’s father. Mr. Marumakan has been produced under the banner of Varnachithra Big Screen.

FRIDAY

Cast: Fahadh Faasil, Ann Augustine, Nedumudi Venu

It’s the tale of several events on an eventful Friday – November 11, 2011 in Alappuzha. It has been directed by debutant Lijin Jose. “If a film is labelled as a ‘new generation’ film because it breaks the conventional formula of a hero, a villain and a single topic of discussion, then, yes, Friday is one such film,” says Lijin. “I think Friday belongs to an entirely different genre compared to the other Onam releases and there is no competition as such. The film caters to a different kind of audience,” adds the director.

RUN BABY RUN

Cast: Mohanlal, Amala Paul

Director Joshiy’s Run Baby Run, made under the banner of Galaxy Films, has Mohanlal and Mynaa girl Amala Paul in the lead. Sachi, of the Sachi-Sethu duo, is the scenarist. Venu (Mohanlal) is a much-in-demand freelance news cameraman who is paid handsomely by leading television channels to cover the news for them. Renuka (Amala Paul) is the executive editor of a news channel. She is efficient and bold. The two have known each other for quite a long time but they detest each other. Until, they get-together to work on a confidential news story… Says Sachi: “The film is an entertainer but it can’t be classified as a thriller in the conventional format. However, there are quite a lot of thrilling moments in it.” While the other three Onam releases are already in the theatres, Run Baby Run is all set to hit the screens on Thiruvonam day (August 29).
