Letter seeking enhanced penalty for actor turned into appeal

The Bombay High Court has converted a letter written by slain television executive Neeraj Grover’s father, seeking enhancement of punishment to Kannada actor Maria Susairaj and her accomplice, Emile Jerome, into a criminal appeal.

A Division Bench of Justices A. S. Oka and S. S. Jadhav ordered the conversion on Monday. The letter was written by Amarnath Grover directly to the judges. It was processed under the provisions of Section 372 of the CrPC, wherein the victim doesn’t need permission from any law enforcement or prosecuting agency to appeal.

Last July, Jerome, a former Navy officer, and Susairaj were convicted by a local court for murdering Neeraj Grover and sentenced to 10 and three years’ imprisonment, respectively. The verdict sparked anger among sections of society, who thought Susairaj had escaped with a 0lighter punishment.
