Government thinking of opening a sports university: Ranjan

‘The varsity should come up in Bangalore’

Minister for Youth Services and Sports Appachu Ranjan said on Tuesday that the State government was thinking of starting a sports university in the State.

He was speaking to presspersons after chairing a review meeting of his department here. Mr. Ranjan said that such a sports university should come up in Bangalore. This was because many guest lecturers and coaches from foreign countries could visit the university. Coaches from the State should be sent to other countries for training.

He said that the government would appoint 290 coaches in the State, which had only 93. Senior coaches would be appointed at the district-level, while juniors in taluks. Ten more coaches would be appointed for big cities such as Bangalore and Mysore.

There were sports hostels only in 23 districts. The government wanted to start sports hostels in the remaining seven districts. It had increased the fund for food of students staying in sports hostels. The norms of height and weight for admission to sports hostels would be relaxed to some extent to attract more students, he said.

In some districts of the State, the fund allocated for sports remained unspent. His department would issue notice to such districts. Each district should have a full-fledged stadium. Only 11 districts had full-fledged stadiums, he said.

The government had released the draft youth policy. The policy would be given a final shape shortly. The government also wanted to bring in a sports policy shortly.

It wanted 10,000 girls and boys under the Kreeda Sanjeevini Insurance Scheme. They would be able to get insurance coverage for treatment in hi-tech hospitals up to Rs. 3 lakh.

Nearly 300 boys and girls from every district would be enrolled under the scheme. The government wanted five per cent reservation of jobs in government and private sectors for sportspersons, the Minister said.

It was the duty of the urban and rural local bodies to reserve two per cent of their tax collection and transfer them same to the Deputy Commissioners, who headed the district sports committees, for use for development of sports.

The government was planning to establish a velodrome in Bijapur, Mr. Ranjan said.
