Top-seeded Sruta Kirti Gunuganti overcame Zeel Desai 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in the girls’ under-14 quarterfinals of the Fenesta National sub-junior tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Thursday.
Zeel Desai was serving for the match at 5-4 in the decider, in which she had enjoyed a 5-3 lead before Sruta held her serve. However, Zeel lacked the conviction and Sruta played freely, without any signs of nerves, for a well-earned victory.
Zeel saved three match-points in the 12th game of the decider, but buried a forehand into the net on the fourth.
Sruta, an eighth standard student of Delhi Public School in Hyderabad, and a trainee of Vasudeva Reddy and Narendra Nath, will be challenged by the fourth-seeded Mihika Yadav in the semifinals.
Garvit stuns Fatehdeep
In the boys’ under-16 section, Garvit Batra knocked out the fourth-seeded Fatehdeep Singh, the runner-up of the last edition, in three sets.
After failing to strike any sort of rhythm in the first set, Garvit settled to play a solid game, even though his single-handed backhand was the target of his opponent.
Garvit will face Sai Nikhil who beat P. V. Gnana Bhaskar. The second-seeded Vishu Prasad was knocked out in straight sets by S. D. Prajwal Dev while Shashank Nautiyal sweated it out in three sets against Udayan Bhakar.
In the girls’ under-16 section, the top two seeds Snehadevi Reddy and Pranjala Yadlapalli stayed on course for a title clash.
In the under-14 boys’ section, Alex Solanki beat the second-seeded Nitin Kumar Sinha in three sets, to set up a semifinal against Sanil Jagtiani. The other semifinal will feature the top-seeded B. R. Nikshep against the fourth-seeded Paramveer Singh Bajwa.
