The woman is suspected to have been strangulated
A 49-year-old woman was found dead inside her first floor flat in an apartment complex on Baby Nagar 2 Main Road, Velachery on Monday evening. She is suspected to have been murdered. The victim’s daughter found the body in the drawing room when she came to her mother’s house for lunch.
According to Velachery police, the victim, Vanaja had called her daughter Chandralekha, who runs a dental clinic in Velachery, around 1.30 p.m. asking why she had not yet come for lunch. The latter said she would be there in a couple of hours as she was caught up with work.
Around 3.30 p.m., Chandralekha arrived at the flat to find the door ajar. On entering, she saw Vanaja’s body lying in the drawing room with blood dripping from her nose and a dupatta wrapped around her. The police was informed and a team including Deputy Commissioner, Adyar, R. Sudhakar reached the spot.
Police said they suspected Vanaja was strangulated though there were no marks on her neck.
The Deputy Commissioner was also unsure if the case was one of murder for gain as all the jewellery in the house was intact and a necklace was found on the bed. “Her daughter also said that Vanaja would never open the door for strangers. However, there were no signs of a break-in,” Sudhakar added
Fingerprint experts combed the flat and a sniffer dog was brought in. Vanaja had a bypass surgery and was undergoing medication. Her body was shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem which is likely to reveal if she was murdered or died of natural causes, police sources added.
Vanaja’s husband Chiranjeevi died 10 years ago.
Her daughter Chandralekha (29) lives in Adambakkam. Vanaja was living with her other daughter Shanmughapriya (27), an IT employee.
